麻豆原创 Downtown was created with the mission of connecting students to opportunities through networking, internships and jobs. The proximity of the campus to Orlando\u2019s Central Business District places students within walking distance of job and internship opportunities, and for many legal studies alumni they were able to experience that firsthand.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Department of\u00a0Legal Studies\u00a0is the\u00a0largest\u00a0undergraduate\u00a0legal studies program in the country.\u00a0A hallmark of the program is its\u00a0internships, which provide\u00a0valuable\u00a0experiences for students.\u00a0Each year,\u00a0between 60 and 75 students partake in an internship.<\/p>\n

\u201cInternships provide our students with the invaluable opportunity to apply what they have learned in our classes in a real, yet still educational, legal environment,\u201d says\u00a0Margarita\u202fKoblasz,\u202fJ.D., associate\u00a0lecturer\u00a0and\u00a0internship\u00a0coordinator. \u201cAllowing them to hone their skills under the mentorship of a practicing attorney, all while gaining practical work experience before graduating and stepping into the professional arena.\u201d<\/p>\n

麻豆原创 Downtown\u00a0had the opportunity to speak to three students that were able to gain internships even throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and\u00a0are now putting\u00a0the skills they\u00a0learned both\u00a0as students and interns\u00a0to work.<\/p>\n

Alyssa Spadel ’21<\/strong> is a legal\u00a0studies<\/a>\u00a0graduate\u00a0who\u00a0interned\u00a0at the Gray Law Firm, a personal injury law firm,\u00a0during her senior year.<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Throughout her internship, she worked on a federal case with Attorney Gray (whom she worked under), who had co-counsel on the case. After her internship ended, the co-counsel hired Spadel to continue to work on the case. She says the best experience she had was when she sat in a federal court hearing with Attorney Gray. \u201cIt was very surreal, and I felt so lucky to have an opportunity like this at such a young age\u201d Spadel says.<\/p>\n

Throughout her\u00a0legal studies\u00a0classes,\u00a0Spadel\u00a0was able to gain important knowledge and tips that set her up for success in preparation for this internship.\u00a0\u201cThe\u202fLegal\u202fStudies\u202fdepartment had done an excellent job preparing me, as I was ready to tackle any task handed my way,\u201d\u00a0Spadel\u00a0says.\u00a0\u201cThe most basic classes in the major,\u202flegal\u202fresearch and\u202flegal writing, had allowed me to be thoroughly prepared to tackle the drafting and researching I had been asked to complete. I was able to use\u00a0WestLaw\u00a0and Lexis Nexis without any interruptions as I had done so in my classes.\u00a0I felt very confident in what I had learned in my classes which allowed me to be successful in my\u00a0internship.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before\u00a0her internship,\u00a0Spadel\u00a0was unsure\u00a0about her future\u00a0as COVID-19 had sent\u00a0her\u00a0home for many months and made\u00a0her\u00a0nervous to make such a big commitment. However, after everything\u00a0she had\u00a0learned\u00a0she says she is\u00a0confident that law\u00a0is the path\u00a0she wants\u00a0to take.\u00a0\u201cThis Internship was truly indescribable, and I would recommend this opportunity to anyone and everyone!\u201d<\/p>\n

Michael Acquaviva\u00a0\u201821<\/b>\u00a0interned\u00a0at Jordan Law\u00a0\u2013 located just\u00a09 minutes away from\u00a0麻豆原创 Downtown.<\/h2>\n

\"\"
\nDuring his three month internship, Acquaviva worked on virtual traffic hearings as well as a few DUI and criminal trials.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cIt advanced my knowledge tremendously throughout the trial process and ultimately gave me [experience] as to understand what type of law I may want to pursue in my professional career,\u201d says Acquaviva.
\n\u201cThis internship provided me with an opportunity to develop interpersonal relationships with attorneys, office staff, and many other\u202flegal\u202fadvisors, as well as shed light on the solidification that becoming an attorney was, in fact, for me,\u201d\u00a0Acquaviva\u00a0says.<\/p>\n

Lastly, Andrew William Hathcox \u201920 <\/b>interned during his last semester as an undergraduate student at the Ninth Circuit Public Defenders Office in the 14th and 16th divisions, which handle the office\u2019s criminal felony cases.<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The Public Defender’s Office is only half a mile away from campus, which made it easy for him to serve as a\u202flegal\u202fassistant to the assistant public defenders in the divisions.\u202fAfter his internship, Hathcox was given the opportunity to come back to the office to continue his work until he leaves for law school in July 2021.<\/p>\n

Hathcox says a few of the primary skills this internship required include a meticulous approach to\u202flegal\u202fresearch, a firm understanding of the ethical requirements within a law practice, and the utmost professionalism when engaging with clients or other\u202flegal professionals.\u202fWhile reflecting on how prepared Hathcox was for this internship, he stated \u201cLegal\u202fStudies\u202fprepared me for this internship by incorporating the tools used by lawyers in the practice of law into our curriculum. Being able to hit the ground running when asked to conduct\u202flegal research or draft documents set me apart from interns that were less equipped.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also gained\u00a0important\u00a0skills\u00a0during his time,\u00a0including\u00a0virtually conducting client initial interviews, taking trips to the Orange County Jail to correspond with clients, watching officer body worn camera\u00a0footage\u00a0of client arrests,\u00a0as well as going through other evidence in a cases discovery, attending court proceedings, and attending evidence viewings.\u202f\u201cThis experience has solidified my dedication to achieving a\u202flegal\u202feducation and\u00a0has\u00a0helped form the foundation for which I can start to build my\u202flegal\u202fcareer,\u201d\u00a0Hathcox\u00a0says.<\/p>\n
