麻豆原创 Joins New Partnership to Recruit Life Science Companies /news/ucf-joins-new-partnership-recruit-life-science-companies/ Fri, 27 Feb 2015 22:38:06 +0000 /news/?p=64661 Central Florida has long been recognized as a top destination for entertainment and hospitality, but the region offers much more. It鈥檚 also a burgeoning global center for health care and life sciences. Four pillars of the Central Florida business community are pleased to announce the launch of IQ Orlando, an innovation-focused business partnership concentrated on recruiting and launching life science companies. The 麻豆原创, Tavistock Group, AHG Group, and Florida Hospital will harness their collective strength to provide an ecosystem to grow early and mid-stage companies.

鈥淭his is the realization that all four community stakeholders are committed to advancing life science in our community,鈥 said Lars Houmann, President and CEO of Florida Hospital. 鈥淯nited, our efforts will accelerate the process and capitalize on opportunities that could not be achieved alone.鈥

Goals for IQ Orlando include improving the health of the population, increasing access to care for individuals, and lowering the cost of health care. As part of its mission, IQ Orlando is excited about the potential to partner with companies like SMRxt, a smart sensor and software technology that records, monitors and quantifies the time and dose of patient medication adherence behavior.

鈥淲e are evaluating sites across the nation, including Central Florida, in search of strong medical communities and tech hubs for the relocation of our corporate operations and manufacturing headquarters,鈥 said Michael Huffer, CEO of SMRxt. 鈥淭his region provides rich resources including Lake Nona Medical City, Florida Hospital Health Village, the Florida Advanced Manufacturing Research Center, and the 麻豆原创 College of Medicine. These assets, accompanied by the collective strength of the IQ Orlando partners, would be excellent sources of support and collaboration for our pioneering medical adherence product.鈥

IQ Orlando is focused on recruiting and launching both national and international health-focused companies.

鈥淭hese companies we are investing in are looking for a U.S. base to launch their products and services,鈥 said Alan Ginsburg, CEO, The AHG Group. 鈥淭hey will utilize the IQ Orlando ecosystem to do everything from complete the FDA certification process to develop and advance their marketing capabilities.鈥

As another resource for companies, IQ Orlando is introducing a Digital Health Lab to provide start-ups with a platform to develop and test new enterprise and consumer applications in smart sensors, health care IT, and the Internet of Things. The Digital Health Lab will offer an integral asset to life science start-ups as technology advances. Life sciences have digitized the human genome, medical diagnostics, the medical record, and is now poised to do even more.

鈥淚 believe that what will distinguish IQ Orlando is the benefit of having a living lab so innovators can develop their solutions in concert with consumers,鈥 said Rasesh Thakkar, Senior Managing Director of Tavistock Group, developer of Lake Nona, the 7,000 acre, award-winning, health-inspired community anchored by Lake Nona Medical City, one of the nation鈥檚 fastest growing life sciences innovation clusters.

IQ Orlando will harness the collective strengths of its founding partners in order to create an environment rich in real-life, functional health resources for companies.

鈥淭he power of partnerships drives virtually all of our successful economic development activities in Central Florida, including Medical City, the Florida High Tech Corridor, and the Florida Advanced Manufacturing Research Center in Osceola County, which will develop the next generation of smart sensors,鈥 麻豆原创 President John C. Hitt said. 鈥淭hrough our newest partnership venture, IQ Orlando, we look forward to helping our local and state leaders attract high-tech, well-paying jobs that strengthen our innovation economy.鈥

This announcement took place during the 2015 Lake Nona Impact Forum, which attracted more than 250 of the nation鈥檚 top CEOs, health care innovators and thought leaders to Lake Nona Medical City for three days of collaborative conversation to inspire impactful health innovation.

    Benefactor's Gift: iPads for all 100 M.D. Students /news/benefactors-gift-ipads-for-all-100-m-d-students/ Thu, 16 Dec 2010 17:32:10 +0000 /news/?p=18890

麻豆原创 College of Medicine students received a high-tech gift for their Christmas stockings Wednesday as local philanthropist Alan Ginsburg gave new iPads to each of the school鈥檚 100 M.D. students. The hand-held electronic devices will allow students to take notes, review on-line scientific journals and 3-D medical imaging, and even take paperless exams. And students鈥 use of the iPad will be part of a two-year research study on the use of technology in medical education.

Students cheered as Dr. Deborah German, vice president for medical affairs and dean of the College of Medicine, announced the gift. During the past few days, rumors were circulating about the possibility of an iPad holiday gift for the medical students. 鈥淏ut we didn鈥檛 want to get our hopes up and then be disappointed if the gift ended up being chocolate,鈥 said M-1 student Alvin deTorres. Alvin said he was delighted with the portable technology because it will provide immediate access to the college鈥檚 Harriett F. Ginsburg Health Sciences Library, which is 98 percent digital.

Nadine Dexter, library director, told students that the iPads were a 鈥済ift of love鈥 from Ginsburg, who thought they would be a fitting tribute to his wife鈥檚 love of reading and learning. 鈥淲ith the iPads, you have information in an 鈥榓nytime, anywhere鈥 environment,鈥 she said. The Ginsburg family鈥檚 earlier donation of $4 million created the 麻豆原创 College of Medicine鈥檚 library. 鈥淲e are delighted to be part of the 麻豆原创 College of Medicine and the way it is training doctors for the 21st century continues to exceed our highest expectations,鈥 Ginsburg said. 鈥淲e hope this gift provides one more way for the students to develop the skills they need to take care of us all.鈥

iPads offer several learning advantages for medical students: They can download PowerPoints from class lectures and type notes directly on the presentation. The device鈥檚 imaging provides what Dexter described as 鈥渆xquisite鈥 3-D images of systems such as the brain and vertebrae, and the large screen allows students to have electronic journals, books and databases at their fingertips.

M-1 student Marcos Colon said he had just told his father last week that he intended to steal Dad鈥檚 iPad over winter break to help with his medical school studies. 鈥淣ow I don鈥檛 have to steal his,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 have one of my own.鈥
