CEDHP Courses Help Florida Teachers Meet Certification Requirements /news/post-esi/ Mon, 23 Feb 2015 21:04:12 +0000 /news/?p=63901 In January of 2014, Florida’s Board of Education enacted聽new revisions聽to the Educator Certification Rule, and among the changes was a requirement for teachers seeking recertification to complete either a one-credit course or 20 in-service hours working with special needs students.

Recent research has shown that students with special needs are underperforming on achievement tests, and聽more so聽than traditional students in the same grade level. With many exceptional education students being served in blended classroom environments, there is a need for every teacher to be better prepared for engaging, preparing, and evaluating students at all levels.聽In an effort to help teachers remain certified while continuing their professional development and enhancing their skill in the classroom,聽麻豆原创 professor聽Dr. Maria Reyes聽and several faculty within the College of Education and Human Performance are currently creating three key programs to offer the credits and experience that teachers need.

鈥淭he first piece is offering online courses in exceptional education for any and all educators seeking recertification,鈥 Dr. Reyes tells us. 鈥淭hose are open to learners who need only basic credits to be recertified. The next level is a course that’s currently in development; it would offer either one-, two-, or three-credit options depending on the teacher’s needs, and each level would involve more modules, activities, and interaction to qualify for the increased credit. Finally, the most comprehensive effort to provide exceptional education experience to teachers is the聽Educators Summer Institute, a two-day conference comprised of workshops, group sessions, and pre-conference online modules that is immersive, complete, and a true learning experience for teachers.鈥

Beyond simply assisting teachers in meeting this new requirement, the courses and the Educators Summer Institute are aimed at enhancing the skills and classroom management abilities of all teachers. Participants also benefit from the technology, research, and experience that 麻豆原创’s faculty offer, ensuring that lessons and activities are preparing teachers with the latest available information.

鈥淲hat we’re hoping to do is provide as much as we can to assist teachers in not only meeting the requirements for recertification, but enhancing their abilities and classroom management,鈥 Dr. Reyes continues. 鈥淚t’s a real need at this point, particularly because there are not very many options. At 麻豆原创 we also have a strong emphasis on the use of technology in exceptional education, and we’re trying to include that as a very useful tool for teachers to incorporate.鈥

HAPPY Hour Student Showcase Speaker Reinforces the Power of Education /news/happy-hour-student-showcase-speaker-reinforces-power-education/ Tue, 10 Feb 2015 14:25:43 +0000 /news/?p=64188 颅颅颅This year’s celebrated the 10th anniversary of the HAPPY Hour workshop program, which offers seminars, activities, and professional development opportunities to undergraduate and graduate education students. In honor of the anniversary and as a reinforcement of the positive impacts the HAPPY Hour program can have, the Student Showcase invited CEDHP alumna and Christine Palmer to be the keynote speaker.

Ms. Palmer spoke to the attendees at the HAPPY Hour Student Showcase about the importance of education; from a difficult childhood and no thought of ever going to college, Ms. Palmer was able to achieve her dream of being a teacher and inspiring students, regardless of their backgrounds, challenges, or hardships. While a returning student at 麻豆原创, Ms. Palmer was the first recipient of the HAPPY Hour Student Showcase Scholarship, and she graduated Cum Laude in 2011 with her degree in elementary education. She credited the HAPPY Hour workshops with being an integral part of her success and development as an educator.

“What the HAPPY Hour Student Showcase does, not to mention the other workshops that are put on throughout the year, is phenomenal,” Ms. Palmer told the crowd of education majors at the Showcase. “When I was in school I was a non-speaker; I was very shy. I knew that talking would probably be required as a teacher, but I wanted to do it anyway. This (the HAPPY Hour program) really helped me be prepared for that; not only me but many of my colleagues too. And that practice led me to some opportunities – I had to give a presentation to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the big wigs at my school district, and standing in front of them I thought ‘I can do this.’ And that is because of the HAPPY Hour program.”

Ms. Palmer’s speech also touched on the importance and power of education, relating her own path to her current career and sharing her enthusiasm for education with her current students.

“(For) Many of the students in my classroom, a college career is not even in their reality… They’re just thinking about surviving. And I’m here to tell them that there’s more than just surviving…”

鈥淐hristine Palmer embodied the goal of the HAPPY Hour program 鈥 the development of its teacher candidates into effective, life-long learners,鈥 , organizer of the HAPPY Hour program, tells us. 鈥淲e are so proud to call Christine one of our own.鈥

Concluding her speech, Ms. Palmer told everyone at the HAPPY Hour Student Showcase, “Remember why you’re doing this, find people who are happy and positive with you, and remember that the students come first.”

The HAPPY Hour Student Showcase is an annual event that brings students in the College of Education and Human Performance together to interact in a conference-like setting, presenting their best work on education projects, drafting presentation proposals and work plans, and interacting with practicing educators in all fields for professional development. Nursing Lecture Discusses Health Care Reform /news/nursing-lecture-discusses-health-care-reform/ Thu, 10 Jan 2013 22:41:45 +0000 /news/?p=44818 The 麻豆原创 College of Nursing kicked off the spring semester last night with an evening lecture discussing the role of nursing leaders as the nation implements healthcare reform.

Peggy Reiley, senior vice president and chief clinical officer for Scottsdale Healthcare (Arizona), shared her knowledge and expertise, and discussed the implications of the Affordable Care Act on the role of nurse leaders, evaluated the forces necessitating health care reform, and identified opportunities for nurse leaders to get involved as the nation moves to a new model of accountability for 鈥渉ealth care鈥 versus 鈥渟ick care.鈥

Reiley said, 鈥淪hifts in the current healthcare system are largely cost related. Some of these issues include overtreatment, over-reliance on technology and coordination of care. Nurses are involved in many of these issues and will need to be part of the solution for the future.鈥

The free lecture 鈥 Nurse Leaders Role in Health Care Reform: Leading a Journey of Transformation and Accountability 鈥 was open to the public and attended by healthcare administrators, clinical nurse leaders, community partners, prospective and current students, and nursing faculty. Nurses had the opportunity to earn one contact hour of continuing education credit.

鈥淭hese lectures are important for expanding our knowledge as nurses,鈥 said Joy Parchment, director of nursing strategy and implementation at Orlando Health and a student in 麻豆原创鈥檚 nursing Ph.D. program. 鈥淚 chose to attend because I want to continually broaden my exposure to the latest evidence and research that influences decisions and affects the practice of nursing.鈥

Susan Clark, a clinical coordinator at Martin Health System in Stuart, Fla. and first-year student in 麻豆原创鈥檚 Executive Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.) program, says she values having ownership for the profession and staying current with the latest nursing trends because healthcare is an ever-changing environment.

The Jan. 10 event supported by Florida Blue, formerly Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, is part of the college鈥檚 semiannual Nursing Distinguished Lecture Series where a national leader is invited to discuss current nursing leadership topics. The series spans two days, including the evening community lecture, followed by a day-long intensive seminar with the visiting professor and faculty and students in the college鈥檚 online Advanced Practice D.N.P. and Executive D.N.P. programs.

While both programs are offered online, the college brings faculty and students together twice a year at the beginning of the spring and fall semesters to discuss thought-provoking leadership topics with a national nursing leader.

Writing Camp for Teens to Combat Influence of Social Media /news/writing-camp-for-teens-to-combat-influence-of-social-media/ Mon, 25 Jun 2012 18:19:47 +0000 /news/?p=38073 The style often used in composing texts, tweets and e-mails is taking a toll on the communication skills of young writers, says one concerned 麻豆原创 instructor who created a summer camp to instill principles of good writing in middle- and high-school students.

Terry Ann Thaxton, an associate professor in the English department, doesn鈥檛 blame computers and technology, but rather the new communication techniques that make it easy to shortchange precise and lively writing.

鈥淐omputers have brought writing more to the foreground,鈥 she said.聽 鈥淐ommunication is part of being human, but social-media writing is taking out all the imaginative threads, all the description, all the interesting parts of language.鈥

Thaxton has taught at 麻豆原创 since 2000, and also interacts with public school children during the year through The Literary Arts Partnership at 麻豆原创 that she founded 10 years ago. The partnership offers free storytelling and poetry workshops to underserved children, youth and adults in Central Florida.

She said that when she first started offering the writing workshops she noticed that many of the children didn鈥檛 have an imagination, so they just gave up trying to write creatively.

鈥淲e had to show them how to pretend,鈥 she said. Learning how to write creatively helps enhance an author鈥檚 literacy, attitude, character and self-awareness, which also benefits the community, she said.

Thaxton organized the July 9-13 writing camp at 麻豆原创 after receiving requests from parents and seeing firsthand the increasing need for young writers to improve their skills.

鈥淎lso what I鈥檝e noticed in the classrooms in public schools is that teachers are pressured into having high scores on the FCAT, so they focus on teaching just those skills but not the 鈥榤eat鈥 of writing,鈥 she said. 鈥淐reative writing allows students to draw from the raw materials of their life and be imaginative. You need your imagination for writing everything from journalism to a memo for your boss.鈥

And what are some simple tips to improve writing?

For starters, Thaxton said, tighten up sentences, don鈥檛 rely on spellchecking, and reduce reliance on adverbs.

鈥淢any writers overuse adverbs by using one for every verb,鈥 she said. 鈥淚f you鈥檙e using too many of them, you鈥檙e probably not using the right verb.鈥

The summer writing camp will have morning and afternoon sessions at 麻豆原创 Continuing Education, 12565 Research Parkway, Suite 390.

The morning session (9 to 11 a.m.) will study the basic structure of a screenplay as a starting point for writing stories and short scripts.

The afternoon session (1:30 to 3:30 p.m.) will focus on writing as an act of imagination, and memory as a source of ideas for creative nonfiction.

The fee for each session is $100, or both for $175. For more information or to register, go to http://ce.ucf.edu/creative. The deadline to register is July 5.

Proceeds will go toward supplies for The Literary Arts Partnership’s free writing workshops during the year at public schools, foster homes, community centers, residential treatment facilities, shelters, prisons, and assisted living facilities.
