Former 麻豆原创 Football Coach Gene McDowell Dies /news/former-ucf-football-coach-gene-mcdowell-dies/ Tue, 26 Jan 2021 23:45:53 +0000 /news/?p=117356 McDowell led the Knights from 1985 through 1997 and during the first seven years of his tenure also served as athletics director. He died at the age of 80.

]]>
Gene McDowell, who won more games than any other 麻豆原创 head football coach as the longest-tenured individual in that role and also served as the Knights’ athletic director, died Tuesday morning in Quincy, Florida. He was 80.

McDowell produced an 86-61 mark (.585) with the Knights from 1985 through 1997.

When he took over at 麻豆原创 the Knights were playing as an NCAA Division II program. Five years later in 1990 麻豆原创 began competing as a Division I-AA independent and in 1996 moved into Division I.

McDowell led 麻豆原创 to the NCAA Division II playoffs in 1987 and the Division I-AA playoffs in both 1990 (the first program to make the playoffs in its first season of eligibility) and 1993. Under his direction, the Knights finished 10-4 in 1990, 9-4 in 1987 and 9-3 in 1993.

He also served as athletic director at 麻豆原创 from 1985 through 1992. Under his watch 麻豆原创 won a Division II playoff game in 1987 with a 12-10 victory over Indiana (Pennsylvania) and led the Knights to an FCS playoff win in 1990 in a 52-38 win against William & Mary.

McDowell won the Eddie Robinson Award in 1990 as the top head coach in the NCAA Division I聽Football Championship Subdivision聽(formerly Division I-AA).

A linebacker and offensive guard for the Seminoles from 1960-62, McDowell earned third-team All-America honors from the Associated Press as a senior. That same year he served as the Seminoles’ captain and was named MVP.

He was an assistant coach at Kansas State from 1970-73 and then coached Florida State defensive ends in 1974-75 and Seminole linebackers from 1976-84 under head coach Bobby Bowden.

A native of Waycross, Georgia, he recruited former all-star quarterback Daunte Culpepper to 麻豆原创. Culpepper set 15 school records as a junior in 1997 in McDowell’s final season as 麻豆原创 head coach.

Under McDowell’s watch the Knights had their first player selected in the NFL Draft鈥攚ide receiver Ted Wilson in 1987.

McDowell led 麻豆原创 to a No. 2 national ranking in the Division II poll thanks to five straight wins to start the 1988 campaign.

In 2015 McDowell was honored with an endowed scholarship in his name鈥攚ith the 麻豆原创 McDowell Endowment Fund given annually to an incoming football player.

Arrangements are pending.

Ceremony Honors Lost Knights /news/ceremony-honors-lost-knights/ Tue, 03 Apr 2012 12:57:33 +0000 /news/?p=34666 麻豆原创 faculty, SGA president speak at Eternal Knights

    ]]>
Overwhelming feelings of love and community filled the Pegasus Ballroom last Thursday, when nearly 300 麻豆原创 family and friends said goodbye to deceased 麻豆原创 students at the 2012 Eternal Knights Memorial Service.

The Knights remembered at this year鈥檚 ceremony included Stephan Gomez, Christopher Beck, Kyle Urbanik, Andres Bermudez, Anwar Rashid, Anna Adams, John Phillips, Ann Hefferin, Mathew Paul, Taylor Wynn, Jack Beard and Sean McLeod.

The ceremony began when a single bagpipe player led a processional of speakers toward the stage.

Maribeth Ehasz, vice president of Student Development and Enrollment Services, welcomed the guests, then led them through the campus-wide moment of silence. When the intercom announced the moment throughout the Student Union, the building鈥檚 normal hustle and bustle was humbly silenced for 30 seconds.

The moment of silence was followed by the presentation of colors and the singing of the National Anthem, as well as a prayer by Brad Crawford of Campus Faiths and Ministries.

Though Crawford expressed thanks for many gifts, he ended his prayer on the theme of strength.

麻豆原创 President John C. Hitt followed by telling a story of a man in a Nazi Germany prison who questioned what individuals must do in the face of loss.

鈥淭hank you for coming today, even at the cost of pain, to honor your loved ones among these 麻豆原创 students, who are now Eternal Knights,鈥 Hitt said.

Hitt was followed by Student Body President Matthew McCann.

鈥淭ogether, as we remember the students we have lost this year, we uphold and embrace the third tenet of our creed: community,鈥 McCann said. 鈥淥ur campus is more than a school or a collection of buildings: 麻豆原创 is a community and a family.鈥

The 麻豆原创 Gospel and Cultural Choir followed McCann with the singing of the traditional gospel tune, 鈥淭otal Praise.鈥

Eulogist Dr. Carolyn Hopp introduced each Eternal Knight by name, college of study and major. After each introduction, a single yellow rose was placed in a vase dedicated to an individual student. After the placement of the rose, a bell was rung and the student was declared an Eternal Knight.

A moment of quiet reflection was held for the audience as a time to observe the honor their friend or family member had just received, and then Contemporary A Cappella stood and sang 鈥淪tand By Me.鈥

The event ended with a poem, We Will Remember, which was written for the ceremony.

Students from around campus attended the event, many of whom came straight from class. Those who did not know any of the honored students still found the ceremony a touching and rewarding experience.

鈥淎 lot of people think that because we鈥檙e 58,000 that students can get lost in the fray, but that鈥檚 really not the case,鈥 said Abu Ngauja, a sophomore advertising/public relations major.

Also in attendance were numerous Delta Delta Delta sorority members, coming to remember and give respects to freshman Hefferin, who died during the first week of the fall semester.

鈥淚 met Ann this past fall and only got to know her for a week,鈥 sophomore advertising/public relations major Araima Caballero-Contini said. 鈥淏ut she is an inspiration to all of us and taught us all a really great lesson in community.鈥

In respect for the Eternal Knights, the 麻豆原创 emblem in the middle of the Student Union was covered with yellow roses for the day.

    New Initiatives for Solemn Tribute /news/new-initiatives-for-a-solemn-tribute/ Mon, 11 Apr 2011 11:12:02 +0000 /news/?p=22518

The 麻豆原创 flag flew half聽staff on March 30 as the 麻豆原创 community honored the lives of 14 students. Eternal Knights, in its tenth year, memorializes 麻豆原创 students who have passed away during recent academic terms. It enables families and friends to join with the campus community in a solemn tribute to their loved ones. During the eulogy, each student is recognized and given the title, “Eternal Knight.”

A team of Student Development and Enrollment Services (SDES)聽and Student Government聽Association聽representatives volunteered to plan the program, with the goal of increasing awareness of the ceremony and making it more personal for the families in attendance. This year, the planning committee implemented a number of initiatives, including:

  • A campuswide moment of silence, which will be poised to grow each year and someday truly become campuswide
  • Eternal Knights awareness ribbons, which were worn by SDES staff members and students prior to and day of the ceremony
  • Large black ribbons tied around first and second floor pillars in the Student Union atrium
  • Decoration of the Pegasus logo in the Student Union Atrium with candles and yellow roses, in students鈥 honor
  • Memorial sheets, completed by family and friends, to be submitted to University Archives so students are eternally preserved in 麻豆原创 history
  • At the reception following the ceremony, SDES Leadership Team members presented a Certificate of Achievement, the Senate resolution, and an etched vase to each family, on behalf of the university. While this was a very somber event, families and friends in attendance seemed to appreciate the gesture, including the fact that a university of this size took the time to recognize their loved ones.
