麻豆原创鈥檚 Revamped Student Union to Reopen /news/ucfs-revamped-student-union-to-reopen/ Thu, 03 Sep 2020 18:38:22 +0000 /news/?p=111520 The Heart of Campus 鈥 which now includes a full-service Starbucks 鈥 will open its doors Aug. 8.

]]>
The long-awaited renovation of the Student Union will be unveiled when the Heart of Campus reopens Aug. 8 with limited hours. Regular operating hours are planned to resume Friday, Aug. 21.

The three-year project saw its final phase of renovations completed just in time for campus to welcome back students for the fall semester. Expanding dining options now include a full-service Starbucks on the second floor 鈥 the coffee shop on Memory Mall isn鈥檛 going anywhere 鈥 and additional seating and square footage.

The boardwalks, which have been closed due to construction on the building, will open again to allow for pedestrian traffic between the Union and Memory Mall.

鈥淲e hope to set up an environment that allows for students to still enjoy our facilities while staying safe,鈥 says Rick Falco 鈥98 鈥01MA, director of the Student Union.

As such, in accordance with university guidelines, face coverings are required inside the building.

Read more below about the Student Union鈥檚 new guidelines, modifications and practices for its most-used spaces and resources as 麻豆原创 continues to work to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

All Knight Study

The Student Union oversees both locations at Knights Plaza and Ferrell Commons, which will reopen Monday, Aug. 24, seven days a week with reduced hours to allow for overnight sanitation.

These hours may be adjusted as needed:

  • Monday 鈥 Thursday: 7 a.m. until 2 a.m.
  • Friday: 7 a.m. until 10 p.m.
  • Saturday: 11 a.m. until 10 p.m.
  • Sunday: 11 a.m. until 2 a.m.

Public-use computers in these facilities will be reduced to 50 percent capacity to encourage physical distancing, with staff sanitizing workstations once an hour as well as having sanitizing wipes available for students.

Group study rooms will be closed.

Events

To help protect event participants and the campus community, the Student Union strongly suggests events occur following a virtual or hybrid model.

In order to host an in-person event, facial coverings and social distancing measures are required for both indoor and outdoor spaces. All event spaces will have fixed setups with limited modifications. In keeping with state guidelines, gatherings are limited to no more than 50 people.

Clients will be fully responsible for enforcement and must submit a safety plan at least two weeks prior to the event. Sanitation of the event spaces will take place between events.

All in-person events must be ticketed or RSVP with guest list maintained for 60 days after the event.

Wednesday Market Days as well as other non-university events will not be held for the fall semester.

Virtual Studios will be available to support both live and pre-recorded virtual events.

Knights Helping Knights Pantry

The main campus food pantry for students started as a closet in the Student Union more than 10 years ago. Although it now has its own space in Ferrell Commons, it still is supervised by Student Union staff.

All students are welcome to use the pantry鈥檚 services. The pantry is open Monday through Friday on the main campus from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please note, the pantry will be closed Aug. 10鈥14 for inventory and reorganizing but will resume operations Aug. 17.

It currently offers curbside pickup of food items, and starting Aug. 24 will offer in-store shopping by appointment only for clothing and miscellaneous items. No food items will be available during an in-store shopping appointment.

In-store appointments and curbside pickup will both be arranged in advance via an online form. More details about the process are forthcoming.

While the pantry is still accepting food donations, pantry staff kindly requests no clothing donations at this time. Contactless drop-off of food items can be donated at the two bins located outside of the pantry鈥檚 entrance and it is highly encouraged to donate during our hours of operation so on-site staff can process the items quickly and efficiently.

PHOTOS: New 麻豆原创 Campus Safety Upgrades to Reduce COVID-19 Impact /news/photos-new-ucf-campus-safety-upgrades-to-reduce-covid-19-impact/ Mon, 06 Jul 2020 16:36:04 +0000 /news/?p=110798 A look at some of the cleaning and safety measures 麻豆原创 is implementing to keep students, faculty and staff safe as classes resume on campus this fall.

]]>
As 麻豆原创 prepares for the return to campus this fall, many staff members have been and are working hard to develop and enforce plans to reduce the spread of the coronavirus. Here is a look at some of the new safety methods 麻豆原创 has adopted and will continue using throughout Fall 2020.

Across 麻豆原创’s main, Downtown and Rosen campuses, 1,200 touchless hand sanitizing stations have been added聽to allow anyone on campus to quickly clean their hands after touching surfaces.

Everyone on campus is required to wear face coverings in all shared indoor spaces and outdoors in areas where individuals cannot physically distance at least 6 feet from others. 麻豆原创 is providing one free, reusable face covering to each student, faculty and staff member.

Most fall courses will be fully online, with select classes also being offered fully face-to-face or through a newly developed聽BlendFlex Model, which includes online and face-to-face components.听After the Thanksgiving break, 麻豆原创 will transition all courses to fully online to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by anyone who travels for the holiday.

For courses that meet in person, architects and engineers have examined each of 麻豆原创’s 267 classrooms across its main, Downtown and Rosen campuses to develop plans for new seating arrangements that comply with CDC guidelines.

Auditorium classes, such as the one above, will have seats roped off to ensure students are within proper physical distance of one another. The seating in this classroom has been reduced from 454 to 73 and the average fixed-seating classroom will only allow about 22 percent occupancy.

Across classrooms on all campuses 600 disinfecting wipe stations will be available so that students and faculty are able to wipe down seats and other surfaces. The placement of these stations will comply with ADA guidelines.

The left image shows the average portable-seating classroom arrangement before the pandemic and the right image shows a new seating arrangement for these classrooms.

Space between desks have been increased to promote physical distancing. A number of seats have been removed, stacked together and tied up at the back of the room so no one may use them.

To prevent large groups of students from gathering in small spaces, seating will be reduced and/or removed from hallways. The Registrar’s Office is also evaluating the timing of classes and considering increasing time between them to reduce potential contact between students.

Staff members will now use disinfectant foggers to clean seats and other surfaces in each classroom. These tools will help promote more efficient cleaning.

More than 600 foot-operated door openers will be added to bathroom doors to reduce the need to touch these surfaces. More than 200 toilet valves and sink faucets will be upgraded to become touchless.

Motion sensors will also be added to 400 doors across 麻豆原创’s campuses.

Staff members have undergone training to ensure they are aware of proper cleaning and safety procedures. Touch points, such as elevator buttons, door handles, counters and other surfaces that people often come in contact with, will be cleaned twice throughout each day.

More than 530 Plexiglass panels will be installed in places, like the library, cashier stations and offices, to help reduce possible transmission of COVID-19 between students, faculty and staff.

麻豆原创 is upgrading filters in its HVAC systems to mitigate any spread of pathogens through the air. The left filter is a MERV 9, which captures聽bacteria, spores and viruses. The right filter is a MERV 14, which increase performance and capture rate while maintaining good ventilation.

UVC lighting will be added in the HVAC systems to help sterilize air inside of buildings. The strong light essentially stops pathogens from reproducing, thus reducing its potential for spreading. These lights will be added to systems in high traffic areas, such as the library and large classroom buildings, and will be continued to be used indefinitely.

In partnership with Aventus Biolabs, COVID-19 testing and COVID-19 antibody testing is available on 麻豆原创’s campuses. For more info, click here.听

Student Turns Passion for Environment into Think Tank for 麻豆原创 Sustainability /news/student-turns-passion-environment-think-tank-ucf-sustainability/ /news/student-turns-passion-environment-think-tank-ucf-sustainability/#comments Thu, 02 Mar 2017 14:20:34 +0000 /news/?p=76320 Tucked behind the 麻豆原创 Police Department on Libra Drive sits a single-story, brick-facade building that houses 麻豆原创 Facilities and Safety. There, about 100 people plan new buildings, maintain landscapes, create sustainability initiatives and more for 麻豆原创. Thousands of cars zoom past daily, but likely not many passersby realize it鈥檚 there.

Hannah Hollinger is one of the few who does. A senior studying environmental studies, Hollinger became aware of 麻豆原创 Facilities and Safety by being involved in Energy Knights, a student club that focuses on spreading knowledge of how to be more environmentally friendly. The Energy Knights鈥 president at the time told Hollinger that Facilities and Safety was looking for an intern.

鈥淚 went to see what it was about, and I was beside myself,鈥 Hollinger said. 鈥淚 thought 鈥楾his is what I want to get into.鈥 I didn鈥檛 even realize it existed.鈥

In July 2015 Hollinger became Facilities and Safety鈥檚 Sustainability Initiatives鈥 social outreach intern, in charge of marketing campaigns that can educate the 麻豆原创 community on sustainability efforts. After a year of seeing firsthand how Facilities and Safety works to make 麻豆原创 a more sustainable campus, she realized something was missing: student input.

鈥淚 realized how, as a student, we don鈥檛 have access to understand what happens behind closed doors when it comes to sustainability, operations and facilities at 麻豆原创,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e needed a connecting piece between students and operations.鈥

That鈥檚 what inspired her to create the Student Sustainability Advisory Committee, a 13-person committee that began last August. It gives students access to 麻豆原创鈥檚 faculty and staff Sustainability Advisory Committee meetings, and the opportunity to help improve 麻豆原创鈥檚 sustainability in return for internship credit. Students commit for one academic year to create proposals on how they think 麻豆原创 can improve its sustainability and present them to SAC members who can help make them a reality. The first proposals are expected to be presented this month.

Hollinger, right, meets with Student Sustainability Advisory Committee members to discuss their proposals.

Although there鈥檚 no guarantee the student ideas will be implemented, Hollinger is confident most are at least feasible. One proposal is a composting pilot program in The Burnett Honors College. Another idea is to take a plain exterior wall on campus and make it a green wall with plants hanging from top to bottom, which can improve air quality and overall quality of life. 鈥淲e can utilize what used to be just concrete or drywall and make it into a living organism and a place you desire to be,鈥 said Hollinger, who also is the Student Government Association鈥檚 health and sustainability coordinator.

A third proposal is to create a community garden at Lake Claire where students can manage their own plot and grow their own fruits and vegetables.

Targets of each proposal range from improving campus buildings, land, energy usage, food, transportation, waste and water.

The creation of the student committee has been mutually beneficial for students and staff. Students get hands-on learning experiences outside the classroom, and in turn, Facilities and Safety has a stream of fresh, innovative ideas, said Yarazeth Watson Colon, coordinator of 麻豆原创 Sustainability Initiatives. Even though Hollinger will graduate in May, the student committee will live on.

鈥淲e want to continue having students come out of the classroom and into the field to help prepare them for the workforce that鈥檚 growing and changing,鈥 Colon said.

Hollinger first became passionate about environmental issues in her AP Environmental Studies class in high school where she learned the importance of the field and that its job demand was growing. With a Pegasus Scholarship in hand and a growing passion due to the 鈥渃limate-change uproar鈥 at the time, as she calls it, Hollinger came to 麻豆原创 in 2013 to pursue an environmental studies degree and a career in urban planning or public administration.

鈥淚 found other people that care 鈥 sometimes I feel like even more than I do 鈥 and that鈥檚 been really encouraging to me,鈥 she said. 鈥淧lus, there are so many clubs on campus with an environmental aspect. I don鈥檛 think I would鈥檝e gotten that level of exposure had I not come to 麻豆原创.鈥

As Hollinger鈥檚 time at 麻豆原创 winds down, she can rest easy knowing her original mission of social outreach for sustainability initiatives at 麻豆原创 has been successful.

鈥淧eople have emailed me often asking about the opportunity with the SSAC,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 now something other people want to be part of.鈥

Trash Talk /news/trash-talk/ Wed, 23 Oct 2013 14:25:54 +0000 /news/?p=54459 As they say in the sports world, I鈥檓 鈥渢alking trash.鈥

Here are some statistics with which you can easily win a bar bet. 麻豆原创 generates 2,342 tons of solid waste annually that is sent to the landfill. On average, each of us generates about 4.5 pounds of solid waste per day.

And perhaps most importantly, people hold a piece of trash 12 paces 鈥 before they litter.

While 麻豆原创 has one of the most attractive, well maintained, user-friendly campuses in the nation, we have a litter problem. It鈥檚 not a question of the university鈥檚 Facilities Operations and Landscape and Natural Resources departments; they do a fantastic job of keeping the grounds and buildings in tip-top shape, inside and out. You鈥檒l find the staff constantly cruising the campus with barrels and bags, picker-uppers and brooms, mops and all manner of implements, gathering wayward newsprint, candy wrappers, soda cans and on Monday mornings the occasional adult beverage container.

What we have here is a case of neglect. Too many people neglect to pick up after themselves. It always baffles me as to who would set down a banana peel on the ledge of the stairwell in a parking garage. I mean, I love bananas. I鈥檓 even told that in the 鈥60s some folks used to scrape the inside of the skin and smoke the residue. Only heard about it; didn鈥檛 inhale.

The campus newspaper is a great voice, but when it becomes blowing trash it鈥檚 just that, blowing trash.

And Styrofoam cups left half full of suspicious brown liquid? I mean, come on folks; either drink up or put up. Put up in the can, that is. And don鈥檛 get me started on gum. Did you ever notice the little black spots on the concrete throughout the campus, the remnants of chewing gum that lost its flavor on the deck instead of the bedpost overnight?

The fact that 麻豆原创 is a smoke-free campus constitutes two steps in the right direction. First, because of the health issues inherent in smoking. Secondly, because cigarette butts were about to be classified as the 11th 聽plague of the ancients prior to the upsurge in anti-smoking policies. As someone who once emptied his car ashtray on the ground in any convenient parking lot, today I speak with clarity on the matter of those who 聽鈥淏ogart that butt,鈥 having given up the vice some time ago.

All of this leads me to my grand plan for transforming the way we keep our house. That鈥檚 the term our student-athletes use when encouraging the crowd to get behind them at the game: 鈥淭his is our house! 聽C鈥檓on now!鈥

It鈥檚 not something new; it鈥檚 been tried elsewhere before. But if we get behind it you鈥檒l see a difference.

In a nutshell, the plan is to have everyone on campus bend over and pick up one piece of wayward trash every day. That鈥檚 right 鈥 one person, one piece. Every day. Just think; 60,000 students, 10,000 employees. That鈥檚 70,000 pieces of trash getting the respect they deserve each and every day.

The plan is called 鈥淥peration Ben Dover,鈥 named after that great American, Ben Dover, who a half century ago聽bent over to pick up the aforementioned banana peel just prior to the president聽entering New York鈥檚 Waldorf Astoria Hotel, and thus averting what might have been a serious presidential slip. Now 70,000 people are not on the campus every day, but a sizable number are. And if each did his or her part and would 鈥淏en Dover鈥 it would have a significant impact on the appearance of our house.

So my plea and hope is that all who call 麻豆原创 home will bend over each day and scoop up (at least) one piece of trash and put it in its rightful place. The exercise benefits alone warrant the effort

All together now, on the count of three: Bend and stoop, and bend and scoop鈥

Help Local Children’s Christmas Wishes Come True /news/help-local-childrens-christmas-wishes-come-true/ Mon, 21 Nov 2011 23:23:59 +0000 /news/?p=30401 During the holiday season, 麻豆原创 students and staff and faculty members can make a difference in the lives of children from the Bithlo-Christmas area.

麻豆原创 Seeks to Build On Success /news/ucf-seeks-to-build-on-success/ Fri, 03 Dec 2010 20:45:45 +0000 /news/?p=18457 George O鈥橪eary became head coach at 麻豆原创 because he wanted to take the challenge of turning the program around. He has had success, but he never really had consistency.

One season would be good. The next would be bad.

Until now.

The Knights (9-3) have posted back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since O鈥橪eary took over in 2004. What鈥檚 more, they have earned the first poll ranking in school history and host SMU (7-5) in the Conference USA title game Saturday — their third appearance in the game since 2005.

But beyond all that, 麻豆原创 has put together a better season than in-state big shots Florida and Miami. If FSU loses to Virginia Tech and the Knights win, then 麻豆原创 would be the only ranked team in the polls from the state.

“The biggest thing that we fight right now is that we just don鈥檛 have that 80, 100-year tradition that the other schools have where the kids may grow up being another fan of another school,鈥 O鈥橪eary said at a news conference in Orlando this week. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 the fight that we have to fight, but I think the one thing that really has helped us has been the stadium on campus and then the factor that when they come on campus we have great facilities from a time management standpoint.鈥

The other fight, of course, is being outside one of the automatic qualifying conferences. Miami, Florida State, Florida and USF all have that advantage. 麻豆原创 would love an opportunity to join the Big East, and has lobbied for that chance for years. Having back-to-back years of success obviously helps, and so does over $200 million in upgrades on facilities, stadiums and dorms.

The potential has always been there for 麻豆原创 to rise up because of its location, and its access to top recruits. But the progress has been slow to come.

“I think it took probably a year or two longer than I would have liked, but we are getting depth in the program,鈥 O鈥橪eary said. 鈥淭hat is what the key is, playmakers coming up. Most of the playmakers, when you look at the offensive line there are two guys gone out of 10 so there [are] a lot of people back. The running backs are all back and Brynn Harvey, who didn鈥檛 play this year. The receiving corps we have some good young kids coming up, the quarterbacks are back so I think there are a lot of things to work with.鈥

The first task, of course, is winning the conference championship, something 麻豆原创 did in 2007. If the Knights win one more game, they would tie that 2007 team and the 1990 team for most wins in FBS school history with 10.

鈥淲e鈥檙e not going to let this one slip away,鈥 麻豆原创 linebacker Derrick Hallman said. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 want my last memory of Bright House Networks Stadium to be me walking off the field with my head down and I don鈥檛 want another team celebrating on my field with a championship trophy.鈥

Beyond that, 麻豆原创 will be making its fourth bowl appearance since 2005, all under O鈥橪eary. But the Knights are 0-3, and got embarrassed by Rutgers last year in the Beef 鈥極鈥橞rady鈥檚 St. Petersburg Bowl. If they win C-USA, they would most likely play an SEC team in the Liberty Bowl. The next step would be getting a bowl win, and beating teams from the AQ conferences.

麻豆原创 is 2-45 against teams from those automatic qualifying conferences since it joined FBS in 1996, and is winless against in-state teams Miami, Florida and USF. The Knights lost to Florida State in 1995, the year before it moved up to the highest level.

So there is much more work to be done. But first, they must win a conference title.
