2 Music Alumni Win National Competitions for New Gigs in Washington, Hollywood /news/2-music-alumni-win-national-competitions-for-new-gigs-in-washington-hollywood/ Mon, 30 Nov 2015 14:00:57 +0000 /news/?p=69566 Two 麻豆原创 music alumni recently blew past the competition 鈥 literally 鈥 on their way to winning national trumpet auditions for high-profile bands.

Rob Schaer, 鈥02, won the principal trumpet audition for the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra in Los Angeles, and Francis Franqui, 鈥04, won a spot as a bugler in the U.S. Army Fife and Drum Corps, the official ceremonial unit and escort to the president.

鈥淛obs like these in the music industry are very difficult to come by and those that get them are extremely gifted,鈥 said John Almeida, associate professor of music at 麻豆原创.

After Schaer graduated from 麻豆原创 with a Bachelor of Arts – Performance degree, he attended the University of Southern California, where he earned a masters and doctorate in musical arts in 2008. Now that he won the Hollywood Bowl audition, he will be go through a two-year tenure process to secure the orchestra post permanently.

鈥淭his is a wonderful opportunity for me,鈥 he said. 鈥淚鈥檝e been quoted many times regarding the incredible instruction I received from 麻豆原创 from professors.鈥

While at 麻豆原创, Schaer played in the wind ensemble, orchestra, jazz band and marching band. He also played in the pit for some of the Broadway performances at the university.

Now living in Glendale, Calif., Schaer has stayed busy performing and recording. He is a substitute musician with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and recently started working as a sub with the LA Opera. His current recording projects include Galavant and Agent Carter for ABC television as well as Family Guy and American Dad for Fox television. He also just started recording for Disney鈥檚 Zootopia, an animated cartoon movie, and The Boss, starring Melissa McCarthy, both scheduled for release in the spring.

Schaer said the support he鈥檚 received after graduation from his 麻豆原创 professors has been remarkable.

鈥淏oth John Almeida and Lyman Brodie check on me weekly via phone, text or email. They really care about my career and are always looking for updates and to offer encouragement,鈥 he said. 鈥淚n the L.A. freelance world where sharks are constantly circling, it鈥檚 nice to have professors who are now friends who I can call and lean on at any moment.鈥

Franqui, who graduated as a liberal studies major with an emphasis in music education, lives in Texas and performs with the 1st Cavalry Division Band from Fort Hood, but will move to Washington in January to join the fife and drum corps.

The group performs at all armed-forces arrival ceremonies for visiting dignitaries and heads of state at the White House, and has participated in every presidential inaugural parade since President Kennedy’s in 1961.

He said his audition consisted of performing several trumpet songs and bugle calls.

鈥淭his is a culmination of a lot of dedication, passion and hard work. I committed to practicing at least six to eight hours a day for the last six months just for this audition,鈥 Franqui said. 鈥淏eing selected to play among such a fine group of musicians presents another huge opportunity for musical growth and inspiration.鈥

While at 麻豆原创 he participated in the Marching Knights, the orchestra, wind ensemble, jazz ensemble, brass quintet and trumpet ensemble.听He also has since recorded with the Hai Dozo Brass Quintet in Japan and the Black Jack Brass quintet in Texas.

鈥淢y strong musical foundation was laid by great experiences that I acquired as a music student at 麻豆原创,鈥 Franqui said. 鈥淚 have lots of friends who went to other prestigious music programs to include music conservatories that didn’t have as rich of an experience as I did at 麻豆原创. The fact that 麻豆原创 is surrounded by the entertainment business alone is a huge asset to any student trying to land an entertainment career.

鈥淚 was able to study with great professors such as John Almeida, Lyman Brodie, Jeff Rupert, Ron Ellis and Lazlo Marosi, to name a few. In addition, I had professional musicians in town to go to for help and guidance. We were exposed to amazing artists that would come to 麻豆原创 to share their knowledge and experiences. My time at 麻豆原创 was priceless.鈥

Franqui said he didn’t know what to expect when joining the Army Band program, but after two years of service, he said it was one of the best decisions of his life.

鈥淚 love performing with great musicians, traveling and entertaining huge audiences,鈥 he said, 鈥渂ut most importantly, I get to serve my country doing what I am most passionate about.鈥

Music Clinic to Feature Tower of Power Horn Section /news/music-clinic-to-feature-tower-of-power-horn-section/ Mon, 02 Apr 2012 12:08:17 +0000 /news/?p=34477 For Central Florida musicians hoping one day to take their skills on the road, some musicians from the road are coming to 麻豆原创 to help sharpen those techniques.

The horn section of the Tower of Power, the high-energy funk and soul band that has performed together more than four decades, will present a free clinic April 11 at the 麻豆原创 for anyone that would like to attend.

John Almeida, associate professor of trumpet studies, scheduled the clinic while the band is in Orlando for a concert. The Orlando stop is the group鈥檚 first performance back in the United States after a three-week tour in Europe, playing to fans from Amsterdam to Zurich, and other stops in between.

鈥淭ower of Power has been playing and touring for 43 years. They are the soul band – they wrote the book,鈥 Almeida said.

Trumpet player Adolfo Acosta said the horn section likes to stop while on tour and present clinics to aspiring musicians.

鈥淲e talk about our personal musical backgrounds as well as answer questions from those attending the clinic,鈥 Acosta said in e-mail from Italy. 鈥淭hose who attend the clinic can expect to hear many horn section excerpts from the band鈥檚 repertoire.鈥

Others in the Tower of Power horn section are: Emilio Castillo, tenor sax; Stephen “Doc” Kupka, baritone sax; Tom Politzer,听 tenor sax, and Sal Cracchiolo, trumpet. Along with Castillo and Kupka, original band members are bassist Rocco Prestia, and drummer Dave Garibaldi.

The visit by Acosta will be a reunion of sorts with 麻豆原创鈥檚 Jeff Rupert, director of jazz studies in the Music Department, who used to tour with Acosta when they played in Maynard Ferguson鈥檚 jazz band in the late 鈥90s.

鈥淚 was in the band eight years and remember the day he [Acosta] came in,鈥 Rupert said. 鈥淲e made a live recording that night, and he was great.鈥

Almeida said part of the clinic will be about the band members鈥 views on playing together as an ensemble, which is one of their trademarks.

鈥淭he sound that this five-man horn section makes is easily recognized by their tight harmony and hard-driving style of playing. No other horn section sounds like them, he said. 鈥淭heir presence and their playing should really inspire our music students to work towards attaining perfection as musicians. These guys are great examples of that.鈥

The clinic will be 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. April 11 in Studio 1 of the Theater Building. The visit is made possible in part by grants from Yamaha Band and Orchestral Instruments, Gerry Lopez Music, and the Horn Section.
