Jewell received First Team status as the Knights tied a school-record (1989) with five all-region selections this year.

麻豆原创 matched Oklahoma State for the most selections to the all-region teams, as the Central Region is made up mostly of schools from C-USA and the Big 12. Memphis and Houston tied for second among C-USA programs with two all-region picks each.

Only a sophomore, Jewell became the fourth-different Knight in history to register at least 10 goals and 10 assists in the same season (joining a list highlighted by Michelle Akers) by finishing with 10 goals and 12 assists for 32 points. The forward also completed her year with 73 shots with 35 of them on goal.

Picking up All-Central Region Second Team accolades for the Knights were junior goalkeeper Aline Reis (Campinas, Brazil) and junior midfielder Katie Jackson (Satellite Beach, Fla.). Reis has now earned an all-region award all three years she has suited up as a Knight, including her All-American season of 2008 as a freshman. She collected five shutouts in 2010, posting a 1.03 goals-against average and 77 saves. In front of Reis at midfield, Jackson scored six goals and added seven assists for a career-high 19 points to rank third on the team.

Reis and Jackson were both members of the All-C-USA First Team this year.

And representing the Knights on the All-Central Region Third Team were sophomore defender Bianca Joswiak (Berlin, Germany) and senior forward Kim Newsome (Apopka, Fla.). Even though she helped anchor the backline, Joswiak finished 2010 sixth on the squad in points by scoring three goals and racking up eight assists for 14 points. On defense, she guided 麻豆原创 to a 0.92 team GAA and eight shutouts. Conversely, Newsome matched Jewell with 10 goals while amassing seven assists for 27 points in her final year as a Knight, scoring five game-winners in the process.

The five student-athletes helped 麻豆原创 finish the 2010 campaign with a 15-5-3 record and its second-straight C-USA regular-season title. The Black and Gold also was a national seed for the second-consecutive year in the NCAA Tournament where it was shipped out to Los Angeles and defeated Fresno State in the First Round only to fall to the host UCLA Bruins, 2-1, in the Second Round. It was 麻豆原创’s 15th trip to the postseason.

Soccer Player of the Year: Tishia Jewell /news/soccer-player-of-the-year-tishia-jewell/ Wed, 03 Nov 2010 13:00:41 +0000 /news/?p=17515 麻豆原创 women’s soccer sophomore forward Tishia Jewell (Satellite Beach, Fla.) was voted by the league’s coaches as the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year Tuesday. The Knights also placed a league-high six players on the all-conference teams and had one selection to the all-freshman squad.

Jewell became the first Knight to be named the Offensive Player of the Year since 麻豆原创 joined C-USA in 2005. In all, the Black and Gold has had five players in six seasons earn major awards in C-USA including Jewell. Courtney Baines (Defensive – 2005), Jennifer Manis (Defensive – 2007), Danielle Dos Santos (Newcomer – 2007) and Becca Thomas (Midfielder – 2009) also were honored as players of the year by the conference.

After a freshman year where she did not score a goal and had four assists in 21 matches, Jewell has burst onto the national scene in 2010. She ranks third in the country with 12 total assists and 12th with 32 points. She also has scored 10 goals this year to become just the fourth-different Knight to post at least 10 goals and 10 assists, a list that includes Michelle Akers who accomplished the feat twice.

Along with her prestigious award, Jewell was one of six Knights who grabbed a spot on the all-conference teams. 麻豆原创 has now put six on the All-C-USA squads in each of the past two seasons.

Jewell joined junior midfielder Katie Jackson (Satellite Beach, Fla.) and junior goalkeeper Aline Reis (Campinas, Brazil) on the All-C-USA First Team this year. Its Jackson’s first time as an All-C-USA performer, while it was Reis’ second-straight season she was voted onto the first team. Jackson has scored six goals while adding six assists for 18 points, and Reis has recorded four shutouts, a 10-3-3 record and a 1.04 goals-against average in net.

Claiming spots on the All-C-USA Second Team for the Knights were senior forward Kim Newsome (Apopka, Fla.) and freshman defender Marissa Diggs (Rowlett, Texas). Newsome finished the regular season tied with Jewell for a league-high six goals in C-USA games, and she has nine goals and six assists for 24 points overall. And 麻豆原创’s representative on the C-USA All-Freshman Team as well, Diggs came on strong in C-USA matches. Along with scoring two goals, she has started 13 matches in her first year at the Division I level and has helped the 麻豆原创 defense post a combined 0.91 GAA and seven shutouts.

Capping off 麻豆原创’s awards was sophomore defender Bianca Joswiak (Berlin, Germany), who received a spot on the All-C-USA Third Team for the second-consecutive season. Even though she serves as an outside back for the Knights, Joswiak has scored two goals and racked up seven assists for 11 points. Her six assists in league matches were second in C-USA behind only eight by Jewell.

The talented group of student-athletes helped guide the Knights to a 13-3-3 overall record, their fourth regular-season title in six years and a No. 1 seed in the C-USA Championship Wednesday-Sunday at the 麻豆原创 Soccer Complex. 麻豆原创, which is ranked No. 23 by Soccer America, received a bye in to the semifinals and will take on the winner of No. 4 SMU and No. 5 Rice Friday at 7:30 p.m.

One Win Away From Soccer Title /news/one-win-away-from-soccer-title/ Sun, 24 Oct 2010 21:46:02 +0000 /news/?p=17109 The 麻豆原创 women’s soccer team is just one match away from winning another Conference USA title after shutting out SMU, 3-0, Sunday at the 麻豆原创 Soccer Complex. The first-place Knights (12-3-3, 7-1-2) will close out the regular-season at home Friday against Southern Miss at 8 p.m. as they are looking for their second-straight C-USA crown and fourth in six seasons in the league.

“That was a solid 3-0 win, and we played much better in the second half even though we were up 2-0 in the first half,” said head coach Amanda Cromwell. “We came out in the second half and just shut them down across the board. I’m proud of the shutout and we had some beautiful goals today.”

With 23 points in the league standings, 麻豆原创 moved closer to guaranteeing itself a first-round bye in the C-USA Championship in Orlando Nov. 3-7. If Memphis defeats Houston Sunday, then the Knights and Tigers will both secure first-round byes.

The Knights outshot the Mustangs (11-6-2, 6-4-0) 23-6 on Sunday, including a 14-2 cushion in the final 45 minutes. That marked the third-consecutive match 麻豆原创 amassed at least 20 shots. Keeper Aline Reis needed to make just one save for her fourth shutout of the season and 17th of her career.

C-USA’s leading point producer, Tishia Jewell collected two more assists to give her 12 on the year and 32 total points. The 12 assists rank fourth on 麻豆原创’s single-season chart (record stands at 17 by Cally Howell in 2000).

With a lot on the line, 麻豆原创 broke out right away and took a 1-0 lead just 1:11 into the match. Following a pass from Jewell, Katie Jackson could have cranked a 24-yard shot but decided to move closer to the goal. That paid off as she dribbled on the right side and sent a cross into the box where Kim Newsome easily headed it in for her eighth of the season.

The Mustangs were hoping to even things up only to have Newsome get in the way of a pass near the 麻豆原创 box. And the Knights would take advantage of that turnover by dribbling the length of the pitch to make it 2-0 in the 30th minute. Following her steal, Newsome began the run by passing it over to Kristina Trujic as the Knights crossed midfield. She would then give it over to Jewell, who ultimately passed it over to Brianna Schooley outside the 18. Waiting for a good look, Schooley sent it inside the box where Trujic finished her sprint down the field by heading in her third goal of 2010 from 13 yards out.

SMU’s best chance in the first half at getting a goal came with 23 minutes remaining but Shelby Hartweck’s shot to the far left side of the net struck the post.

With a 2-0 advantage heading into the second half, the Knights wanted to put it away immediately and did so in the 52nd minute. Controlling possession at midfield, Bianca Joswiak delivered a deep pass to Nicolette Radovcic who beat the keeper on the right side for her third goal of the campaign.

The Knights put it on cruise control the rest of the way, allowing just one shot on goal in the final half. That sets up a Senior Day Friday at the 麻豆原创 Soccer Complex where the Knights could once again lift the C-USA regular-season championship trophy over their heads with a victory.

2OT Draw For No. 19 Women’s Soccer /news/2ot-draw-for-no-19-womens-soccer/ Sun, 10 Oct 2010 20:26:46 +0000 /news/?p=16688 Facing off for first place in Conference USA, the No. 19 麻豆原创 women’s soccer team and Rice played to a 1-1 draw Sunday in Orlando. The Owls remain in first with a 5-0-1 C-USA record (8-5-1 overall) while the Knights’ record moved to 9-2-3 on the year and 4-0-2 in league play.

The tie enabled 麻豆原创 to stay undefeated in its last 15 regular-season C-USA matches (13-0-2), and it also stretched its overall undefeated streak in 2010 to eight games (5-0-3).

The Knights took 22 shots on the day, their second-most in a match this season, however it also allowed 18 attempts which tied for the most by a 麻豆原创 opponent. The Black and Gold finished with a 7-2 lead in corner kicks, while in net, Aline Reis recorded five saves in 110:00 minutes of work.

It was evident both teams put in a lot of energy during their respective victories Friday, as the first half opened a little slowly with neither team putting a shot on goal until the 21st minute. 麻豆原创 would go on to outshoot Rice, 7-4, in the opening half with four of those attempts on goal but the score remained 0-0 at the break.

However the state of the game changed completely in the opening minutes of the second half. Finding herself in a 3-on-2 situation thanks to a pass from Tishia Jewell, Nicolette Radovcic delivered a low cross from the right side into the 18. Waiting right in front, Kim Newsome easily tapped it past keeper Catherine Fitzsimmons for her sixth goal of the year.

Now looking for the equalizer, Rice earned a corner kick in the 54th minute and eventually the ball found Korey Taylor from 11 yards out, but her header was stopped by Reis who was in the perfect spot to cover up.

At the other end of the pitch, the Black and Gold was poised to double its lead in the 61st minute only to have shots by Marissa Diggs and Jewell be blocked in front, and then Stacie Hubbard delivered a shot that barely sailed wide from 25 yards.

Without getting its second goal, 麻豆原创 watched as Rice countered on a goal in the 66th minute from Elizabeth Nesbit even though the Owls were very close to being offsides, and after an initial save from Reis, Nesbit put in the rebound to tie it at 1-1.

麻豆原创’s best chances to find the game-winner came off the foot of Radovcic, yet her shots in the 70th minute and then 2:30 into the first overtime were both corralled by Fitzsimmons to send both teams home with one point in the C-USA standings.

With the weekend wrapped up, the Knights will focus on their last regular-season road trip when they travel to Colorado College Friday and UTEP Sunday, Oct. 17.

Women’s Soccer C-USA Streak at 13 /news/womens-soccer-c-usa-streak-at-13/ Mon, 04 Oct 2010 13:19:32 +0000 /news/?p=16448 “Going to UAB and Memphis has always been a tough trip for us so it was great we came away with a win and a tie this weekend,” said head coach Amanda Cromwell. “We’ve now put ourselves in good position to be one of the six teams who qualify for the C-USA tournament on our home field in November.

“But we have a huge home weekend coming up. We host Houston Friday and Rice Sunday and they are both tied for first with 4-0-0 records. You have to give them credit for getting the job done, but we want to be in first place so we have some work to do and we hope our fans come out and support us in one of the biggest weekends of the year.”

The 3-0-1 start in C-USA marks 麻豆原创’s best record to open its conference schedule since going 4-0-0 in 2007.

Undefeated in its previous six matches (4-0-2), 麻豆原创 outshot the Blazers (5-6-1, 1-2-1), 17-9, but 16 of those attempts came in the first half. The Knights also led in corners, 10-2, while keeper Aline Reis posted three saves, highlighted by two in the second half with the home team trailing by one.

Jackson’s performance Sunday marked her first multi-goal game in her career, and the two goals also gave her six for the season to set a career-high (she scored three goals in 2008 and five in 2009).

UAB’s backline had to work right out of the gate against the Knights’ attack. Through the first 13 minutes, 麻豆原创 racked up seven shots, two of which were saved by keeper Kate Blankenship, two were saved by Blazer defenders and two more were blocked. It was not until the 28th minute where the Black and Gold finally struck for the day’s first goal. Earning her sixth assist of 2010, Tishia Jewell found Newsome in the box who headed in her fifth of the season.

Just less than two minutes later, defender Bianca Joswiak sent a ball over to Jackson right in front for the easy goal to make it 2-0 as Andrea Rodrigues also earned an assist on the play. And to close out the half, a handball by UAB inside the six gave Jackson a penalty-kick chance in the 36th minute and she capitalized to bring the advantage to 3-0.

Even though 麻豆原创 controlled all of the momentum entering the second half, UAB’s Sam Bradford turned it into a whole new match by scoring two goals in a span of 49 seconds in the 55th and 56th minutes. The Blazers then hoped to find the equalizer, taking five more shots the rest of the match only to have Reis and the 麻豆原创 defense hold on for the win.

With the first C-USA road trip behind it, 麻豆原创 returns home to host Houston Friday at 7 p.m. and Rice Sunday, Oct. 10, at 1 p.m.

Top 25 Soccer Knights Beat Pirates /news/top-25-soccer-knights-beat-pirates/ Sat, 25 Sep 2010 15:17:17 +0000 /news/?p=16078 Heavy rain throughout the evening gave way to a wild finish as the No. 23 麻豆原创 women’s soccer team prevailed over East Carolina, 5-3, Friday in Orlando in the Conference USA opener for both teams. A total of five goals were scored in a span of 9:23 late in the second half, and the Knights (6-2-1, 1-0-0) would ultimately end a 3-3 tie in the 81st minute to seal the win against the Pirates (5-4-0, 0-1-0).

“The conditions were tough. It was pouring pretty hard in the first half and then again in the second half. It definitely affects possession teams, but I thought we did have great play-making despite the weather,” said head coach Amanda Cromwell. “We came out alright at the start of the second half and created a lot of chances, but we didn’t have the mentality to put those away. And ECU is very good on corners and set plays. After they tied it at 2-2 we still were able to come back a minute later and take the lead. We didn’t hang our heads when they scored.”

Playing in their road black uniforms, 麻豆原创 scored five goals in its second-straight game, marking the first time it produced at least five goals in back-to-back matches since 2004 (9-0 over Lipscomb and 5-0 over Belmont). It also was the most goals by the Knights in a conference game since a 6-0 win vs. Houston in 2008.

Nine different Knights picked up at least one point Friday, led by Tishia Jewell and Kim Newsome who each had a goal and an assist. 麻豆原创 finished the night by outshooting ECU, 24-7.

The Knights almost snuck one in three minutes into the contest as Katie Jackson tried to angle in a 23-yard shot over ECU keeper Christiane Cordero but it struck the crossbar.

After ECU had a chance of its own moments later, the Knights used three perfect passes to take a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute. Crossing midfield, Nicolette Radovcic found Jewell who ultimately sent it back over to Radovcic as she raced down the right side. As she got deeper towards the endline, the forward delivered a cross into the box where Newsome was waiting right in front for the easy goal. It was Newsome’s fourth of the year.

麻豆原创 almost made it 2-0 with 12 minutes to go in the frame but Jewell’s shot off a corner kick also clanked off the crossbar. But the Knights kept at it and indeed doubled their lead in the 38th minute. A footrace developed where Amanda Martorana tried to beat Cordero to the ball at the top-right of the 18, however both arrived at the same time and a scramble was on. Martorana eventually managed to get a foot on it and she touched it over to Jewell who hammered it home from just over 20 yards out for her fifth of the season.

As time ticked down in the first half, 麻豆原创 had a free kick with 10 seconds left. Jackson sent it over to just outside the top of the box, where Kristen Poulton found the loose ball and fired a shot towards the lower left-corner only to have Cordero make a last-second save right before the horn sounded.

The Knights opened up the second half where they left off by dominating the shot total, yet could not get the third goal they needed. That ended up playing a huge factor as the Pirates scored twice midway through the final half, the first from Chrissy Gratz in the 61st minute and the equalizer from Caty Butler in the 73rd minute.

With the ECU bench still celebrating, it took just 49 seconds for 麻豆原创 to go back in front. Bianca Joswiak found Newsome heading down the left flank, and Newsome then sent in a cross right to sophomore Katie Bolinsky who one-timed it in the air into the far left-corner in the 74th minute. Bolinsky’s first-career goal as a Knight made it 3-2.

However in the 80th minute, the Pirates’ Jessica Woodward scored on a perfect corner kick from Amanda Malkiewicz to once again even things up. Yet just like ECU’s previous goal, the visitors’ emotions died down in only 45 seconds, and it came at the hands of a 麻豆原创 freshman. Winning the ball approximately 41 yards away from the net, Kristina Trujic decided to hammer a shot from long distance. The result was her second of the year as it curled into left portion of the goal for what would be the eventual game-winner.

Not wanting ECU to have a chance at another late tally, just 1:16 after 麻豆原创’s fourth goal Jackson received a pass from Brianna Schooley and ripped off a 22-yard shot that got past Cordero for the final 5-3 margin.

麻豆原创 will now wrap up its weekend Sunday when it hosts Marshall at 1 p.m. live on Bright House Sports Network.

Soccer Knights Beat No. 19 ASU /news/soccer-knights-beat-no-19-asu/ /news/soccer-knights-beat-no-19-asu/#comments Mon, 20 Sep 2010 14:01:32 +0000 /news/?p=15854 Facing an undefeated and red-hot No. 19 Arizona State program, the 麻豆原创 women’s soccer team was once again not intimidated by its opponent in a 5-0 victory over the Sun Devils (6-1-1) Sunday at the Cats Classic Presented by Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, Ariz. It was the Knights’ largest non-conference shutout against a school outside of the state of Florida since an 11-0 win against Alabama A&M in 2000.

麻豆原创’s record stretched to 5-2-1 on the season, as it marked the third-straight year that it will enter the Conference USA season with a 5-2-1 record. And all three of those seasons witnessed the Knights play one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the nation. In 2010, the Knights’ two losses came at the hands of top-10 teams while their tie was against Arizona on the Wildcats’ home field this past weekend.

In all, 麻豆原创 went 3-2-0 this year vs. non-conference teams that reached the 2009 NCAA Tournament.

“We needed a complete 90-minute game and we got that today,” said head coach Amanda Cromwell. “We talked about the mentality of our team after our tie against Arizona, and these players responded. We used every player on the bench because it was so hot, and they all contributed to this victory.

“Aline Reis was great in the air on corners and crosses and had some big saves. Stacie Hubbard didn’t play because of an injury, so Lauren Halbert moved to defensive mid and we ended up having three freshmen and a sophomore on the backline. For them to get that shutout was amazing. And we definitely made our attack a lot more dangerous because it wasn’t predictable today. We lacked rhythm in the attack in certain games this year, but it showed up today.”

Sophomore and Satellite Beach native Tishia Jewell had her first-career multi-goal game, scoring twice in the second half. She also earned an assist to give her a team-high 12 points this year.

The total shots for the match were an even 15-15 (麻豆原创 led 11-7 in shots on goal), however Reis racked up seven saves for the second-straight match to earn her 15th-career shutout. That moved her into a tie with Jennifer Manis for eighth on 麻豆原创’s all-time shutout list. And those seven saves gave Reis 213 in her three seasons as a Knight, which ranks as the third most ever by a 麻豆原创 goalkeeper.

After the match, Reis and forward Kim Newsome were named 麻豆原创’s tournament MVPs, while the duo joined sophomore back Bianca Joswiak and junior midfielder Katie Jackson on the All-Tournament Team.

The tone of the match was set very early when Newsome notched her third of the year when she took a pass from Kristina Trujic, beat two defenders into the 18 and hit the back of the net in the fifth minute. Looking for the crucial second goal, it eventually game from freshman Katy Ling in the 34th minute. After Halbert sent it over to Katie Bolinsky, the sophomore fired a shot on net that Alyssa Gillmore saved only to have Ling pounce on the rebound for her first-collegiate goal.

Up 2-0 entering the second half, Jewell helped 麻豆原创 put things away in the 47th minute. Following a cross from Jackson, Jewell volleyed it from inside the keeper’s box to make it 3-0. Just over 21 minutes later, Jewell recorded her second of the afternoon on a rebound as Amanda Martorana’s ball was initially blocked by the keeper.

And the finishing touches came in the 77th minute where Jewell delivered a through ball to Martorana, who slotted it past the keeper to complete the 5-0 victory.

With that 5-2-1 non-conference record, 麻豆原创 will look ahead to defending its Conference USA regular-season title when the C-USA schedule begins at home against East Carolina Friday at 7 p.m. The Black and Gold will then host Marshall Sunday, Sept. 6, at 1 p.m. on Bright House Sports Network.

“Today was big for our confidence as we go into the C-USA schedule,” said Cromwell. “Beating a ranked team that was undefeated was huge, and knowing we can put together this kind of game where it wasn’t just one player carrying the team will certainly help us for the future.”
