There’s also plenty of construction – and even more on the way.

The work is meant to meet the university community’s needs, from more parking to new research labs to another place to grab a cup of coffee. Here’s a sampling of what’s in progress, what’s on the horizon and what’s been completed.

• Under Construction
• Pollo Tropical and Café Bustello

Students and administrators saw a need for additional food service options on the south side of campus, particularly since the Neptune housing community opened in 2013, adding 650 residents to the 1,640 in the Nike and Hercules complexes.

Construction of a new eatery began recently next to the Recreation and Wellness Center along Gemini Boulevard near the leisure pool. The 3,200-square-foot building will house a Pollo Tropical restaurant as well as another Café Bustello location.

The building is targeted for LEED Silver certification, a measure of the sustainable features in its construction and operation. Construction is targeted for completion around the end of January. None of the funding for the project came from tuition or tax dollars.

Knights Plaza

Knights Plaza, the popular gathering spot in front of CFE Arena, is getting a complete makeover. The centerpiece will be a large Pegasus seal fashioned from black granite tiles. Even more dramatic: The two tall spires along Gemini Boulevard are being retrofitted to add a flame bowl at the top, and they’ll be capable of emitting four- to 10-foot flames fed by natural gas during special events.

The Pegasus seal will be flanked on three sides by planters with palm trees. In addition to the palms, six of those planters will also contain fountains. The west side of the plaza that featured seating areas and shade tarps will be refreshed with new furnishings. The east side near the box office is getting a larger landscape area with crepe myrtles and other shrubbery. It will also have additional seating areas.

Construction started around Memorial Day and is scheduled for completion by the end of August, around the start of the fall semester and football season. None of the funding for the project came from tuition or tax dollars.

Garage C

Workers have almost finished expanding Garage C on the east side of campus. Late last year, crews began building an addition connected to the existed garage structure.

Like the original garage, the addition has four levels. The expansion adds another 604 spaces to the existing 1,290 spaces. Work is expected to be completed in August.

Interdisciplinary Research and Incubator

Construction is well underway on this building near Engineering II. It includes more than two dozen labs – most of them wet labs – that will enable additional research. In addition to the labs, the building will have meeting space, conference rooms and offices.

It’s called “interdisciplinary†because researchers from various Â鶹ԭ´´ colleges and centers are expected to use it, such as physics, chemistry, biology, materials characterization, optics and photonics, nanoscience and more. By bringing them together, university officials expect the facility will spark collaboration.

Work on the first phase is expected to be completed in mid-2017.

• Starting Soon
• College of Optics & Photonics

The College of Optics & Photonics has grown in stature, students and faculty – and has also outgrown its building. It’s already been expanded once, with a three-story addition built onto the original two-story structure.

Plans are in the works to add another addition, also three stories, to the east side of the building. The project would give an extra 13,900 square feet of space to the existing 103,532 square feet. The project brings additional labs and offices, as well as the shell of an auditorium that will be completed later.

The project is now in the design phase. Construction is expected to take 14 months and be finished in early 2018.

• Finished
• Libra Drive

Improvements to Libra Drive, the only way to access the Â鶹ԭ´´ campus from the south, are finished. The project has made the drive easier for students who live in the Nike, Hercules and Neptune housing communities, as well as those entering or leaving campus to the south.

The project widened the road from two to four lanes on the mile-long stretch between Research Parkway and Gemini Boulevard near the water tower. It also added turn lanes at the intersection with Gemini, and elevated low areas to eliminate occasional flooding.

Â鶹ԭ´´ Moon Observation Night Saturday For Entire Family /news/ucf-moon-observation-night-interest-children-astronomy/ Thu, 30 Oct 2014 18:02:37 +0000 /news/?p=62599 Â鶹ԭ´´Â will host a free Moon Observation Night for children and their families on Saturday, Nov. 1, at the main campus.

From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., observers will have an opportunity to view the moon through several telescopes set up at Knights Plaza near the CFE Arena. Students and professors associated with Â鶹ԭ´´â€™s Planetary Sciences Group will be on hand to help viewers decipher the many lunar features they will see through the lens.

There also will be activities geared toward children: star charts, meteorites, demonstrations and other activities, such as “Find the Apollo Lunar Landing Sites on the Moon,†playing off the popular “Where’s Waldo?“ books.

The goal is to share the wonder of astronomy with youngsters and potentially inspire a new generation of space explorers with physics degrees.

“We’re very excited,†said Yan Fernandez, director of the Â鶹ԭ´´ Robinson Observatory and an associate professor of astronomy and physics. “A lot of us remember looking at the night sky through telescopes as children and being in awe of the things we saw, like the moon, our nearest neighbor. We want to make sure children in Central Florida have that same opportunity.â€

A similar event last year drew more than 100 people. An observation night was scheduled last month, but rain forced the volunteers to cancel the event.

“Because it gets darker earlier now, we hope to see people who might otherwise would not have been able to visit in September, when the sun sets later, closer to kids’ bedtimes,” Fernandez said. “And the cooler weather should make for crisper views through the telescope.”

The event is free but parking fees apply. To get live updates, especially if the weather is questionable, look for the Â鶹ԭ´´ Robinson Observatory on Facebook at .

Rec Center Expanding to Knights Plaza /news/rwc-services-reach-across-campus/ /news/rwc-services-reach-across-campus/#comments Wed, 13 Jun 2012 15:33:25 +0000 /news/?p=37439

The Recreation and Wellness Center continues to keep up with the enrollment growth at Â鶹ԭ´´, the second-largest university in the country. In the fall, the Recreation and Wellness Center plans to begin offering services at a center in Knights Plaza on the north end of campus.

The creation of the facility coincides with the new 10-year contract signed by Matthew McCann, former Student Government Association president, and James Wilkening, director of the RWC. Wilkening says the expansion is part of the RWC’s continuing mission, “We are thrilled to be able to expand opportunities for the students to engage in healthy lifestyles.â€

RWC at Knights Plaza will occupy 8,700 square-feet of space at the corner of the West Plaza Drive and Gemini Boulevard and is scheduled to open in fall 2012. It will offer students living in the North Towers near the arena the convenience of nearby recreation and exercise capabilities and serves as an alternative for the entire campus. The facility will feature strength and cardio equipment and a mind and body studio for less intense group exercise like yoga.

Â鶹ԭ´´â€™s Recreation and Wellness Center is funded by SGA. Its continuing mission is to enrich campus life through programs that foster healthy lifestyles. RWC is a department in the Division of Student Development and Enrollment Services.

Chef’s Goal: Best Food on Campus /news/chefs-goal-best-food-on-campus/ Fri, 02 Mar 2012 17:18:12 +0000 /news/?p=33531 New restaurant on campus is hit among students

]]>
Many eating establishments come and go at Â鶹ԭ´´, but one restaurant recently added last month hopes to stick around.

Skewerz, a new restaurant recently added to the broad spectrum of eateries outside of the Â鶹ԭ´´ Arena, is attempting to thrive and grow through unique food, a wide range of ingredients and fresh ideas.

Established this semester and located between the Domino’s and the Subway at Knights Plaza, Skewerz seeks to bring something different to the table: cuisine inspired by owner Randy Reich’s life in Israel.

“The culmination of Skewerz is simple: When I was in the army in Israel and when I was growing up in Israel, this was my favorite meal,” Reich said. “I’d order two skewers and I’d put it on a fresh-made flatbread of laffa and I would load it up with everything. … It would be massive, it would be like a three-pounder almost. You just sit there and eat it; I didn’t have to eat for the rest of the day.”

At Skewerz, it all starts off with selecting the type and amount of meat you’d like. After choosing between chicken, pork, beef, shrimp and vegetables, customers then decide to have it wrapped, tossed in a salad or plated with sides. The meat, which is cooked on skewers, is then applied to a laffa, a type of flatbread wrap, and topped with ingredients ranging from cheddar cheese, relish, jalapeños, cucumbers and many more.

Reich feels that the end product is a unique blend of flavors.

“The way I describe it is you have this infusion of all the flavors that you can think of that you like at one time jumping into your palate, as opposed to separately eating things that you like, it all just comes together,” Reich said. “Nothing does that. Not even a burrito, so to speak, because I believe the starches take away from the flavor.”

Samuel Ward, a sophomore at Valencia College majoring in public relations/organizational communications visiting Skewerz for the first time, also felt that the food was on a level of its own.

“It’s epic, I’m just about done in less than five minutes,” Ward said as he took the final bites of his wrap. “I’m a big fan of Chipotle. At first I thought it was gonna rival Chipotle, but to me it’s just another class by itself. … I can’t make a comparison between the two, but this is still epic.”

Reich believes that Â鶹ԭ´´’s campus is an ideal location for Skewerz to grow and succeed.

“The energy on a campus is really the biggest thing,” Reich said. “You go anywhere in the world, especially in the Middle East and Israel in a market, and it’s very casual and informal. You’re not there to be dressed in a suit, sit down, and wine and dine; you’re there to have a good solid meal without breaking your pocket. … And that’s exactly what this is. There’s no better place to try that and see the reaction than the energy on a campus.”

Soukaina Aroui, a Â鶹ԭ´´ junior majoring in civil engineering, also felt that Skewerz had something special to offer.

“I like it; it’s different. Â鶹ԭ´´ doesn’t have these kinds of restaurants, so this is unique,” Aroui said. “They do a really good job, that’s why I’m here today.”

Jennifer Coliton, an employee at Skewerz and a Â鶹ԭ´´ freshman majoring in elementary education, felt that the quality of the ingredients also helps the food to stand out.

“Everything we make is fresh; we don’t own a freezer in the place,” Coliton said. “None of the meats are frozen and stored. Everything you have is completely fresh. We make the dough right in front of your face, and we cook the meat right in front of your face.”

Skewerz has also recently begun serving breakfast, where customers can order scrambled egg wraps and pancakes.

Reich said that the establishment also plans on enhancing the menu even further in the near future.

“We’re gonna get into a dessert line once we hit the summer,” Reich said. “We wanna do s’mores, which we’ll do marshmallows on a skewer and offer it on the side with chocolate sauce, you know what I mean? So people can put it on there with a graham cracker laffa.”

Taking a look at the restaurant’s revenue, Reich feels like the hard work has paid off so far.

“I’m at 70 percent of my targeted number to reach as far as the sustaining amount that I’m comfortable with the possibility of a slight profit margin in there,” Reich said. “From opening, I was at roughly 50 percent. So I’ve grown 20 percent, and I’ve only been open now going on seven weeks, which is kinda huge.”

Skewerz has also recently added a card reader that accepts Knight Cash, which Reich thinks will help their business even further.

Though a profit is important to the restaurant’s success, Reich stressed that making good food comes first.

“I just want everyone to say that they loved it,” Reich said. “If I closed tomorrow because I couldn’t financially make it, I’ll always have the fact that it was the most favorite food on campus and that everybody loved. What else can a chef and an owner ask for?”

Reich said that Skewerz is currently seeking stability at Â鶹ԭ´´ and that more success could mean branching out to several more locations nearby in the future.

Â鶹ԭ´´ Building New Parking Garage /news/ucf-building-new-parking-garage/ Wed, 24 Feb 2010 13:40:36 +0000 /news/?p=10663 Construction is starting on a new $14 million, 1,326-space parking garage at the Â鶹ԭ´´ in March.

The parking garage is expected to be completed in time for the Orlando campus’ spring semester, starting January 2011. Located on Gemini Boulevard near Knights Plaza, which is home to the university’s sports complex and arena, the structure will support parking for athletic events and entertainment venues, as well as parking for students traveling to and from class.

Jacksonville-based Haskell is providing the design/build services for the 402,000-square-foot pre-cast parking structure, which was designed to match the architectural style and brick facade of the surrounding campus buildings. Existing stormwater retention is being incorporated under the facility.

“The need for additional parking structures at the Â鶹ԭ´´ resulted from the loss of parking lots on the inner core of our campus and the increase in student population,” said Kris Singh, director of Â鶹ԭ´´’s Parking and Transportation Services. “The idea behind this particular parking structure was to put it on the perimeter of campus to promote walking to popular areas.”

Offering 225 degree programs, Â鶹ԭ´´ now has more than 53,000 students on its 1,415-acre main campus.

Haskell, which has office in the U.S. and Mexico, is a design/build firm practicing in the general building and civil infrastructure markets with annual revenue of more than $718 million.
