Virtual Parking Permits to Replace Decals, Hangtags on 麻豆原创 Campuses /news/virtual-parking-permits-to-replace-decals-hangtags-on-ucf-campuses/ Mon, 27 Jun 2022 14:00:33 +0000 /news/?p=129155 Innovative technology brings more convenience and safety for students, employees and visitors.

]]>
Beginning July 1, the university community will shift to a new way to park on 麻豆原创 campuses.

New technology will eliminate the need for parking decals, hangtags or any physical permit on vehicles. Instead, will act as virtual parking permits. Parking Services trucks will be equipped with License Plate Readers (LPR) that automatically scan the license plates of vehicles parked in garages and surface lots on all campuses 鈥 the main campus, 麻豆原创 Downtown, the Rosen College of Hospitality Management and Academic Health Sciences in Lake Nona. The LPR cameras determine whether vehicles are registered.

To purchase a virtual parking permit, all drivers have to do is visit the website on their computer or mobile device and enter the vehicle鈥檚 information.

This innovation in parking technology means no more standing in long lines at the parking office, waiting for your permit to arrive in the mail or losing your hangtag.

鈥溌槎乖粹檚 transition to virtual permits using LPR technology will simplify the process for parking access while promoting safety, convenience, efficiencies and sustainability,鈥 says Andy Rampersad, assistant director of 麻豆原创 Parking and Transportation Services.

It鈥檚 important to remember that all vehicles must park nose-in and plate-out so the LPR cameras can verify the vehicle has been registered. Failure to adhere to the policy may result in a warning or parking citation.

You can choose from several options for your virtual permits: a 365-day permit, a 150-day permit or a daily permit.

All current parking decals and hangtags purchased before July 1 will expire on Aug. 31. New virtual permits purchased starting July 1 will be valid from date of purchase and expire based on the type of permit purchased. If you have a physical decal or hangtag that expires Aug. 31, you will need to register your vehicle and purchase a virtual permit by the expiration date to avoid citations.

If you have two vehicles, you can register both 鈥 the second vehicle can be added for just $15. However, only one vehicle per account can be parked on any one of the 麻豆原创 campuses at the same time. If your vehicle is in the shop for repairs or if you’re driving a rental vehicle, you can update the substitute vehicle鈥檚 information online up to six times with a 365-day permit and three times with a 150-day permit.

Seating and Operations

When possible, riders will board buses through back doors to reduce contact with drivers.

Standing room is discontinued across all shuttles and seating capacity will be reduced by 20 percent. While most fall courses will be online, ridership will be reduced with minimal impact to wait times. Riders can track arrivals and departures听ucf.doublemap.com and through the .

Each night shuttles will be cleaned with a disinfectant fogger. This efficient method uses a safe, high-grade EPA-registered disinfectant, which is 99.999 percent effective against a variety of bacteria and viruses and exceeds CDC requirements.

Some windows will be left open throughout the day to allow fresh air to circulate throughout the shuttles.

Face Coverings

As 麻豆原创 is requiring students, faculty and staff to wear face coverings on campus, the same requirement applies while on shuttles. Shuttle drivers are required to wear face coverings and signage will be posted onboard to remind everyone to wear their cover.

麻豆原创 students and employees, including those who were on campus for Fall 2020, may receive one free, reusable face covering during Spring 2021. A valid 麻豆原创 ID will be needed to collect a face covering from a distribution location on the main, 麻豆原创 Downtown or Rosen campus. Face coverings can also be redeemed for free, or purchased for $5 if you’ve already received your complimentary item, 听through vending machines across each campus.

New 麻豆原创 Parking Policy to Take Effect July 1 /news/new-ucf-parking-policy-to-take-effect-july-1/ Thu, 20 Jun 2019 12:25:41 +0000 /news/?p=98847 All vehicles on campus will be required to park in spaces nose-in and plate-out.

]]>
Beginning July 1, a new policy for parking on 麻豆原创 campuses will go into effect to promote campus safety and parking technology.听This new technology requires all vehicles to park nose-in and plate-out. No back-in or pull-through parking is permitted in any parking garages and surface lots within 麻豆原创鈥檚 main, downtown, health sciences, and Rosen School of Hospitality Management campuses.

In the near future, 麻豆原创 will eliminate the need to issue physical parking decals, hangtags or any tangible permit. Instead, will act as parking permits for all parking pass options 鈥 annual, semester or daily.

All students, faculty, staff, visitors and vendors are required to adhere to the new nose-in policy, which applies to all licensed vehicles. Failure to adhere to the policy may result in a warning or parking citation.

Andy Rampersad, assistant director of 麻豆原创 , says implementation of the cameras and nose-in parking policy will efficiently identify vehicles without parking credentials and accurately scan license plates during the citation issuance process. He says it also helps to support law enforcement operations by receiving notifications of vehicles associated with a crime.

鈥淟ike many other universities and municipalities embracing this technology around the country, 麻豆原创 is joining the trend of transitioning to virtual permits for the sake of costs, sustainability, efficiency and safety.听Implementing the nose-in parking policy now will create a smoother transition for virtual permits, which is the longer term solution,鈥 Rampersad says. 鈥淲e appreciate everyone鈥檚 cooperation as we continue to strengthen campus safety and promote a parking-friendly campus.鈥

Physical parking decals are still required for the 2019-20 school year, and prices will remain the same as last year. There are no current plans for any future increases due to the license plate recognition technology initiative.

More information about the switch to virtual permits will be provided at a later date.

Frequently Asked Questions About License Plate Readers

  • What are license plate readers?

License plate readers, known as LPRs, are cameras that quickly and efficiently capture vehicle tag numbers. Those numbers can assist law enforcement with detecting vehicles associated with crime and analyzing vehicle activity in relation to a crime.

麻豆原创鈥檚 LPRs are stationary at campus entry and exit points and mobile as mounted on vehicles used for parking enforcement.

  • How will this technology enhance campus security?

麻豆原创PD is running collected license plates against national and state systems that flag stolen or wanted vehicles; search for license or tag expirations or suspensions; or alert for individuals with criminal investigative interest.

LPRs serve as a force multiplier for police, serving as extra sets of eyes patrolling for suspicious activity. 麻豆原创PD鈥檚 goal is to prevent crime from occurring and also be able to more effectively follow up on any crimes thanks to potential investigative leads captured by the LPRs.

麻豆原创PD鈥檚 use of LPRs is in accordance with guidelines from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

  • Where are the LPRs located?

LPRs are located at all campus entry and exit points to capture the license plates of vehicles coming to and leaving from campus. One on-campus garage also has the technology at entrance and exit points as part of a pilot study. Additionally, some 麻豆原创 Parking and Transportation vehicles will have mounted LPRs to scan in parking facilities.

  • What type of data is collected?

The readers collect license plate information that is then checked against a law enforcement 鈥渉ot list鈥 of license plate numbers flagged for their association with criminal activity. If a match is found, the system sends a notification to 麻豆原创PD鈥檚 dispatch center.

  • How is that data stored?

Data is stored in a secured cloud accessible only to 麻豆原创PD for a limited period of time. Collected data is owned by 麻豆原创 and will never be shared or sold.

  • Who has access to the data?

麻豆原创PD鈥檚 dispatch center will be alerted to license plates flagged by the system, and that information will be shared with officers so that they can make contact with the driver.

麻豆原创PD will exercise discretion when sharing information with other law enforcement agencies to solve crimes, locate missing persons, and for other law enforcement purposes.

  • How do LPRs affect parking at 麻豆原创?

麻豆原创 Parking and Transportation Services utilizes LPRs for parking management and enforcement. Parking does not have access to law enforcement databases but rather compares license plates to tag data collected when purchasing a 麻豆原创 parking permit. Parking will utilize the LPRs to determine whether vehicles have a valid permit and are parked in an appropriate location as designated by their permit.

  • Do other places use this technology?

Yes, LPRs are becoming a commonplace security solution for universities, municipalities, and other private and public facilities.

麻豆原创 Joins Ford, Uber as Semifinalists in National Competition to Make Driving Safer /news/ucf-joins-ford-uber-semifinalists-national-competition-make-driving-safer/ Wed, 05 Dec 2018 15:07:21 +0000 /news/?p=92807 麻豆原创 researchers comprise the only university team left standing in a national competition with a grand prize of $250,000.

]]>
麻豆原创 researchers have beat nearly 50 other teams in a national traffic-safety-improvement competition and now find themselves the only university team competing among industry giants such as Ford and Uber.

Their entry, Real-Time Crash Visualization Tools for Traffic Safety Management, is a computer program that uses big data to predict, and hopefully prevent, traffic accidents before they happen.

Mohamed Abdel-Aty, a Pegasus Professor and chair of 麻豆原创鈥檚 Department of Civil, Environmental and Construction Engineering, leads the research.

鈥淚f you reduce the risk, then you reduce the possibility of an accident or at least you reduce the severity of the accident,鈥 Mohamed Abdel-Aty, Pegasus professor

Using information including real-time traffic data, weather, history of past accidents and violations, and other data, the program predicts if the risk of an accident is increasing or decreasing and presents the probability in an easy-to-understand visual readout alongside a map overlaid with current traffic-flow conditions.

The idea is that if the risk of an accident rises, then transportation officials could implement measures on the spot to reduce the risk, such as reduced speeds, metered ramps and messages warning drivers of perilous conditions ahead.

鈥淚f you reduce the risk, then you reduce the possibility of an accident or at least you reduce the severity of the accident,鈥 Abdel-Aty says.

The national competition, known as the Solving for Safety Visualization Challenge, is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Abdel-Aty鈥檚 team has progressed to stage II of the competition. They will find out in January if they become one of the two finalists to progress to stage III. The winning team will receive $250,000.

鈥淲e have about 30,000 traffic fatalities per year in this country, and millions of injuries. It鈥檚 too much. We have to change our thinking.鈥 鈥撎齅ohamed Abdel-Aty, Pegasus professor

Abdel-Aty says his team鈥檚 tool represents a proactive approach to helping vehicular travel become less dangerous by recognizing dangerous roadways, intersections and conditions before the statistics about their hazards pile up.

鈥淲e have about 30,000 traffic fatalities per year in this country, and millions of injuries,鈥 Abdel-Aty says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 too much. We have to change our thinking. So, for the first time, our system could make real-time improvements based on very rich data and very sophisticated algorithms and allow operators to see on the screen visually the different trends and different dynamics of what鈥檚 happening so they can make better decisions.鈥

Abdel-Aty says he鈥檚 proud to have been selected as semifinalist in the competition and have the chance to have his research implemented into practice.

鈥淲e are the only university selected for stage II … this might be our opportunity to make a difference. So definitely it鈥檚 very exciting.鈥 鈥撎齅ohamed Abdel-Aty, Pegasus professor

鈥淲e are the only university selected for stage II and to be in the company of Uber and Ford and these big companies with unlimited resources and we are working with students shows that we are doing very well,鈥 he says. 鈥淎nd also, to finally reach a stage where all of the ideas that have been developed over the years, published, cited and well-appreciated could be applied. This might be our opportunity to make a difference. So definitely it鈥檚 very exciting.鈥

Abdel-Aty received his doctorate in civil engineering from the University of California, Davis, and his master鈥檚 and bachelor鈥檚 of science degrees in civil engineering from Alexandria University. He joined 麻豆原创 in 1995.

The research team was comprised of students and researchers from the College of Engineering and Computer Science, including students: Yina Wu, Jinghui Yuan, Morgan Morris,Qing Cai, Yaogang Gong, Ou Zheng, Jacob Lites, Jiajia Dong, Whoibin Chung, Moatz Saad, Lishengsa, Jorge Ugan Yue, Shile Zhang, Zubayer Islam, Md Sharikur Rahman, Md Hasibur Rahman and professors Samiul Hasan and Jaeyong Lee.

Making Public Transit Easy for Everyone /news/making-public-transit-easy-for-everyone/ Thu, 21 Jun 2018 15:58:03 +0000 /news/?p=84578 How two 麻豆原创 graduates are using art, technology and logic to change how we use public transportation.

]]>
Early on a Tuesday, Nathan Selikoff 鈥04 is doing what anyone muscling through Orlando鈥檚 morning commute would rather be doing: relaxing outside a coffee shop, watching other cars crawl past. Selikoff is on the phone with his business partner, David Thomas Moran 鈥14MFA, who, when asked where his office is, says candidly, 鈥淓verywhere. It鈥檚 important for us to be mobile.鈥

In a way, that鈥檚 the essence of Selikoff and Moran鈥檚 startup, Omnimodal. They鈥檙e going where they need to be, when they need to be there. The company, launched in early 2017, merges real-time information from public transit systems (I-Ride Trolley, Sanford Trolley) with existing navigation apps on mobile phones (Google Maps, Transit App) so users can plan how to get around and make adjustments on the fly. Because 鈥 let鈥檚 be realistic 鈥 the bus, trolley and train might not be on time.

RS: Public transit. Why don鈥檛 more people use it on a regular basis?

DTM: Actually, people in other parts of the world do use it. They figured out that if everyone drives a vehicle, we all lose in terms of sustainability 鈥 the environment, economic impact, public health and overall quality of life. In this country, we still have to get over some of the stigmas about public transportation.

RS: Stigmas like 鈥?

NS: Giving up control. It isn鈥檛 pleasant to wait for a bus or a train, wondering if you鈥檙e going to be stood up. Your entire schedule for the day can be thrown off. There鈥檚 also the challenge of trying to figure out how to connect routes using various transit systems. It can be overwhelming.

RS: Sounds like you guys know from experience.

DTM: When Nathan got me involved in this, I was into documentary photography and the public-transit experience in Orlando was my main subject. One night a few years ago, I went to a Halloween party and got stranded. There was no bus service that late at night, so I walked 13 miles back to the 麻豆原创 area. It took six hours. I documented the story live on Instagram as a part of the Transit Interpretation Project (TrIP). It was also my MFA thesis project.

RS: And it changed your perspective?

DTM: What I went through happens to people every day 鈥 trying to be on time to work, to the doctor or to school. They might not experience six-hour delays, but in a way it鈥檚 worse, because being just seven minutes late could cost you a job or a grade or who knows what? Over time, you can see the social and economic consequences on entire communities.

RS: How does Omnimodal prevent that scenario?

NS: By giving you back control of your trip plan. You don鈥檛 have to download a new app or sign up for anything. We partner with the transit systems to make their real-time information available on existing apps. For the end user, it鈥檚 more of a Lyft- or Uber-like experience, where you can see the status of your ride 鈥 and change your plan if needed instead of waiting and wondering.

RS: Does anyone look at your backgrounds and say, 鈥淲ait, you both graduated from 麻豆原创 with degrees in the arts?鈥

DTM: Artists. Yeah, sometimes I wonder how this all happened. It鈥檚 true, though, that the interdisciplinary way of thinking from 麻豆原创 made a big difference in all of this. You can look at maps themselves as an art. You add the technology and the solution to a problem, and this is where we are with Omnimodal.

RS: You have careers. Nathan, you鈥檙e an internationally known artist. What really sparked this?

NS: The trigger for me was the summer of 2016. My wife and I spent two months traveling the world. In Nepal, we saw buses loaded with people and heard stories of buses sometimes falling off cliffs because of washouts. Then in Norway the infrastructure stood out, with pristine roads, tunnels, high speed trains and ferries. It was a clear picture of how public transportation impacts communities worldwide. I was inspired to do something about it here.

RS: Then you had to actually do it. What was your first move?

NS: David and I had both ridden buses around Central Florida over the years. So I pinged him and asked, 鈥淚f you could change one thing to make riding the bus in Central Florida a better experience, what would it be?鈥

RS: What was the answer?

DTM: Real-time tracking 鈥 for the bus, train, shuttle, trolley and bikeshare. The whole regional public transit system. We may not be able to change the limitations in transit service or the entire infrastructure overnight. But we can solve this communication problem that鈥檚 deterring riders right now. Instantaneous information is the norm these days.

RS: You鈥檝e only been at this for 18 months. At what point did you know you were onto something viable?

NS: When we partnered with our first client, I-RIDE Trolley on International Drive. They wanted to be onboarded with Google Maps to increase the visibility of their service. They wanted to make it easy for people to plan how to get from Point A to Point B in real time. Now we鈥檙e working with Sanford to do the same thing with their trolley that serves the Historic Downtown Sanford District and connects to the SunRail station.

DTM: We鈥檙e hopeful about partnering with LYMMO in Downtown Orlando soon and really want to get the 麻豆原创 Shuttle and Walt Disney World Transit online, too 鈥 maybe even the Hogwarts Express at Universal Studios. Visitors to the theme parks would really appreciate it.

RS: It seems logical. Do you ever wonder why something like Omnimodal wasn鈥檛 around 10 years ago?

NS: You hear a lot of talk among startups about being 鈥渄isruptors.鈥 That isn鈥檛 us. Instead of disrupting, we鈥檙e asking how we can repair existing transportation systems and make it more attractive for people to use them. We鈥檙e simply building on the evolution of open data standards like the General Transit Feed Specification from the past decade. In the end, it鈥檚 about improving lives and making transportation easy for everyone. That鈥檚 what motivates us every day.

Good news. The 麻豆原创 offers a fleet of free shuttles that serves students, faculty and staff, on and off campus. And if you鈥檙e too busy hunting Pok茅mon to wait at a stop, you can even track your shuttle via GPS on a smartphone app so you don鈥檛 miss the bus.

Many students never bring their cars to campus. (Bonus, you won鈥檛 have to buy a parking pass.)

    The Details

On Campus: If you want to go from one spot on campus to another, ride the Black and Gold lines. They constantly circle campus on Gemini Boulevard, with the Black Route running clockwise and the Gold Route running counter-clockwise. They run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the fall and spring semesters, stopping at the busiest buildings and facilities. They hit every stop every 15 minutes or so.

Off Campus: If you live in one of the 20 off-campus apartment complexes closest to 麻豆原创, you can catch a shuttle to and from home. There are 14 shuttle routes between campus, apartment complexes and Central Florida Research Park. Those shuttles operate every 15 minutes between 6:30 a.m. and 10 p.m.

Other Campuses: There are shuttles that run between the main campus and the Rosen College of Hospitality Management, and others that connect students at the Health Sciences Campus at Lake Nona.

Groceries: On Tuesdays, the Grocery Shuttle runs to Publix at the University Palms Shopping Center just north of campus and several stops on campus: Marketplace, Academic Village (Nike), Towers (front of CFE Arena), and Lake Claire. Shuttles run every 45 minutes from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the final pickup from Publix at 8 p.m.

Park and Ride: If you have trouble finding a parking space, leave your car in Lot E4, the Park and Ride lot at the softball stadium. A shuttle will pick you up there and drop you off at a stop by the Health and Public Affairs buildings. The Park and Ride shuttles听typically run continuously from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and pick up every 15 minutes. During the early part of the fall semester, the shuttles will run听from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday. Due to the temporary closure of Parking Garage C, additional park-and-ride services will temporarily be available at Bright House Networks Stadium from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. starting Monday. Shuttles will take students to and from the Health and Public Affairs buildings.
