Study Union Receives National Recognition /news/study-union-receives-national-recognition/ Tue, 05 Mar 2013 12:54:59 +0000 /news/?p=46599 NASPA Annual Conference

    ]]>
The 麻豆原创鈥檚 Study Union program has been recognized by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators as a 2013 NASPA Excellence Award Recipient. The program received the Gold Award, the top recognition in its category. The NASPA Excellence Awards recognize the contributions of institutions that are transforming higher education through outstanding programs, innovative services, and effective administration. Study Union, partially funded by the 麻豆原创 Parent and Family Fund, is a collaborative effort between Student Academic Resource Center, the Student Union, and the Student Government Association.

Study Union supports the university鈥檚 mission of excellence, scholarship, integrity, community, and creativity. This is accomplished through bold initiatives that community collaborators offer through this program such as 24-hour access to the Student Union, quiet study rooms, group study space, laptops and test supply use, tutoring, test review sessions, supplemental instruction, free massages and exercise classes, to name a few. Every year more and more students participate in this program as they learn about the key resources that are offered to them. As a participant said, 鈥淭he Study Union has exceeded my expectations. I had never before thought that the Student Union was a good place to study but this week has proved me wrong. Another great reason why I love 麻豆原创.鈥

The Study Union was selected for the NASPA Excellence Award on the bases of its positive impact on student learning, success in addressing critical campus and student needs, collaboration with various departments, originality and creativity, amongst other criteria. Recipients will be honored in March 2013, at the NASPA Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida.

Celebrating 50 Years of Growing Together /news/celebrating-50-years-of-growing-together/ Tue, 30 Oct 2012 11:20:00 +0000 /news/?p=42574 SARC鈥檚 Annual Fall Learning Fair 2012

    ]]>
The Student Academic Resource Center鈥檚 annual fall Learning Fair targeted first-year students to increase their awareness and use of learning support services on campus. This event differs from typical campus outreach initiatives in that the more intimate scale encourages departments and organization to engage students in academic dialog. The fair included 26 university departments, services and academic organizations.

The 2012 SARC Learning Fair theme of 鈥50 Years of Growing Together鈥 supported 麻豆原创鈥檚 50th anniversary celebration. SARC created an event mood for students to move through the past five decades and into the future through various visual and auditory elements including a large-scale SARC Family Tree, progressive background music moving from the 1960s to current times, and historical images from the 麻豆原创 archives. SARC staff and Learning Fair representatives wore retro outfits depicting the decades.

New this year, walk-in advising was offered at the event by First Year Advising and Exploration, Sophomore & Second Year Center as well as Transfer and Transition.

The 2012 SARC Learning Fair was a success with 266 students who attended. Of those student participants about 58% were freshmen. Based on results of a written evaluation:

  • 98% felt that the Learning Fair was well organized
  • 99% felt more aware of 麻豆原创 campus resources after attending the fair
  • 92% of participants agreed that they learned at least one strategy to improve their study skills.
  • Student comments included:

  • 听鈥淚 learned more about the resources available at 麻豆原创 through participating organizations.鈥
  • 听鈥淚 learned how to contact my advisors, including skype calls.
  • 鈥濃淚 learned how to get into an honors program.鈥

Students got connected with SSYC advisers and staff from SARC and OPPA.

The Sophomore and Second Year Center held a Summer Social on July 25 for Accelerated FTICs– students coming to 麻豆原创 for the first time with 30 hours or more college credits– at Academic Village in the Nike Programming Center. The theme was 鈥淕et Smart, Get Connected.鈥

Twenty-eight students attended and met with academic advisors from SSYC and staff from Student Academic Resource Center staff and Office of Pre-Professional Advising. They learned about valuable academic resources, strategies for academic success, and heard from a student panel who discussed their perspectives as to what helped them be successful in the Summer B session and following semesters. The panel also included an active question and answer session, followed by a very interactive Tic-Tac-Toe game played by the students attending this session.

The event began with an 鈥渋cebreaker,鈥 refreshments were served and students earned 500 LINK points for attending. LINK points can be used at a lottery at the end of the semester.

Student comments included: 鈥淚t was very informative,鈥 鈥淕reat attitude,鈥 鈥淚 loved it 鈥 educational and fun games,鈥 and 鈥淚 learned a lot.鈥
