麻豆原创 Softball Advances to Super Regionals /news/ucf-softball-advances-to-super-regionals/ Mon, 23 May 2022 13:26:29 +0000 /news/?p=128757 The Knights topped No. 24 Michigan 9-4 in the Orlando Regional final to advance to their first Super Regional in program history.

]]>
For the first time in program history, the No. 16 麻豆原创 softball team has advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals. They went through the Orlando Regional unscathed, beating No. 24 Michigan by a score of 9-4 in the regional final on Sunday.

“We started this year talking about Team XXI and just saying ‘playing with no regrets,'” says head coach聽Cindy Ball-Malone. “They’ve done it. We’re not done; we’re definitely not done. (I’m) just so proud of the fight of this team. I’m super proud of these women and what they’ve done and the odds that they’ve fought against. The show keeps going.”

The Knights jumped on the Wolverines from the start as聽聽fouled off four straight pitches before dropping one into right field to lead off the game. She was pinch ran for by聽, who was able to scamper in just ahead of the throw after聽聽grounded one to the pitcher, who threw to second too late. With one out,聽聽singled up the middle, just behind the second base bag, allowing everyone to advance safely. With two down in the inning, yesterday’s hero,聽, drew a four pitch walk to send Schappacher home for the 1-0 lead.聽聽followed suit, drawing a five pitch walk to push Searcy across. Rowe’s walk chased Michigan starter Meghan Beaubien in favor of Annabelle Widra. The changing of arms resulted in the same result as聽聽drew a four pitch walk to push 麻豆原创’s lead to 3-0.聽聽tried to keep the line moving and nearly did, but it took a sliding catch from the Michigan left fielder to end the side. The Knights sent all nine batters to the plate in the inning.

Michigan scratched two runs across in the bottom of the third inning. The inning started with an error at by the shortstop Macario. The next batter chopped one to second as Molina had to charge and make a tough throw to first. The ball got away, advancing the runners to second and third. A Kristina Burkhardt single up the middle plated both runners to cut the deficit to 5-2. After allowing two runs without recording an out, the Knights escaped the rest of the inning unscathed.

The Wolverines took another step in the road to mounting a comeback, putting another run on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Michigan drew a leadoff walk to start the frame; the run eventually came around to score on a Lexie Blair single up the middle to make it 5-3.

麻豆原创 answered back immediately and started the inning off with a bang as Searcy doubled to right-centerfield. Michigan pitched around Cody to put two on with nobody out. After the first out was recorded, Griffin stepped up to the plate and laced a single to left center, driving in a run. Cody was flying around the bases and was waved around to score after the Wolverine’s left fielder made an error retrieving the ball. Rowe kept the momentum going, smashing a hot shot through the left side of the infield, where the shortstop and third baseman were playing in. The hit allowed聽, who pinch ran for Griffin, to score, making it an 8-3 game.

Michigan saw two of their first three batters in the bottom of the sixth inning reach base, causing head coach Ball-Malone to lift starter聽聽from the ballgame.聽, fresh off a 181 pitch, 11 inning outing, came in and shut down the inning, getting a ground ball and a strikeout to escape the jam. Mancha finished the afternoon with 5.1 innings of work, allowing just one earned run with five strikeouts. She improved her record to 23-3 with the victory and dropped her ERA to 1.62.

麻豆原创 added one more in the top of the seventh inning as Griffin struck again, this time lining one out to the right fielder, pushing across a run on a sacrifice fly for her third RBI of the afternoon. Michigan took a run back in the bottom of the inning as an unearned run came into score. With two on and one out, Woodall got the next batter to groundout, followed by a line drive to Macario at shortstop to send the Knights to their first super regional.

Woodall finished her relief outing by tossing an inning and two thirds, allowing no earned runs on two hits with a strikeout. She tossed just 25 pitches in the contest with 19 of them strikes, bringing her ERA down to 1.85 on the season.

The Knights earned a total of nine walks on the afternoon, setting a program NCAA Tournament best, topping the previous record of four free passes against South Carolina on May 15, 2015. 麻豆原创 entered the weekend ranked third in the country in walks. It’s the fourth time this season that the Knights have been walked nine or more times in a game, sitting just one walk shy of tying a season high.

“Walks are just as big as a base hit or a homerun to me,” says Ball-Malone “They’re passing a bag, putting runners on and putting runners across. Those two pitchers especially are both All-Americans. They’re tough. For us to walk 鈥 a lot of people swing and miss at those balls out of the zone. I’m really proud of their discipline. I like the adjustments they made from yesterday”

The nine runs that 麻豆原创 posted was a record for the Black and Gold in a single NCAA game, topping the previous record of seven, achieved twice and last on May 21, 2010 against FIU.

麻豆原创 entered the weekend 1-8 all-time against Michigan, with the lone win coming in 2020. With the two results from this weekend, the Knights have now taken three of their last four from the Wolverines.

The Knights are now .500 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, posting a 16-16 record to this point.

The victory brings 麻豆原创 to 49 wins this season, just one behind tying the program high of 50 set in 2015. It’s just the third season that the Knights have reached 49 wins, joining the 2015 and 2008 teams in doing so.

UP NEXT
The Knights match up with top seeded Oklahoma in their NCAA Super Regional round in a best two-of-three format. Game one of the series will be Friday at 4:30 p.m. with game two taking place on Saturday at 2 p.m. The “if necessary” game, is slated for Sunday at a time to be determined later.

Walk-Off HR Gives No. 15 Knights Softball Title /news/walk-off-hr-gives-no-15-knights-softball-title/ Sun, 10 May 2015 14:26:05 +0000 /news/?p=66309 With one swing of the bat, junior Samantha McCloskey gave No. 15 麻豆原创 the American Athletic Conference tournament championship.

The Most Outstanding Player of the tournament’s walk-off home run to left field gave the Knights a 1-0 victory over Tulsa on Saturday afternoon at the 麻豆原创 Softball Complex.

Seniors Mackenzie Audas and Kahley Novak and junior Shelby Turnier joined McCloskey on the all-tournament team.

麻豆原创 (48-7) earned both the regular season and the tournament title for the first time in school history. The Knights used the 21st shutout of the season to capture the first tournament title since 2008.

With the title, 麻豆原创 Softball, which is presented by City Kia of Greater Orlando, earned the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Knights will be making back-to-back appearances for the first time in program history.

The NCAA Selection show will be Sunday at 10 p.m. ET on ESPNU. The 麻豆原创 softball team will be hosting a watch party beginning at 9 p.m. at Bar Louie across from the 麻豆原创 campus.

Turnier tossed a one-hit complete game. She fanned five batters with just two walks.

McCloskey, who went 3-for-3 on the day, opened the fifth inning with a single up the middle. After working a full count, sophomore Willow Kalinen drew a walk to put runners on first and second with no outs. A groundout advanced both runners, but Tulsa’s Caitlin Sill got the Hurricane out of the jam with her first strikeout of the day.

Both teams were retired in order in the sixth inning. A pair of catches from Kalinen in right field and a groundout to junior Kalyn Cenal kept Tulsa off the scoreboard and sent the Knights to the plate where McCloskey delivered the game-winner.

Softball: Farrah Sullivan, Player of the Year /news/softball-farrah-sullivan-player-year/ Fri, 09 May 2014 16:05:34 +0000 /news/?p=59202 麻豆原创 also earns Coaching Staff of the Year.

]]>
After helping 麻豆原创 to the program’s first regular season championship, junior third baseman Farrah Sullivan was honored as the American Athletic Conference Player of the Year on Wednesday night at the league’s awards banquet at the North Sheraton Hotel in Houston. The Knights were also acknowledged with the conference’s coaching staff of the year.

“I give this award to my teammates, because I would not be in this position without their support,” Sullivan said. “Playing well in conference play was my goal because those games are the important ones. I feel like it was great to be on base all the time and doing what I have to do to help us put runs on the board.”

Sullivan was also named to The American first team along with sophomore pitcher Shelby Turnier, while junior pitcher Mackenzie Audas, sophomore designated player Jessica Ujvari and freshman outfielder Linnea Goodman earned second team honors.

Sullivan’s player of the year honor was the first for the Knights’ program since Stephanie Best won three-straight Atlantic Sun awards from 2003-05. The Waynesboro, Miss., native compiled a .522 avg. during league play with 24 hits, 19 RBI, seven doubles and two homers.

“It just shows that when Farrah [Sullivan] puts her mind to something and is really focused, she is just unstoppable,” head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie said. “She has been improving all season long. The coaches of the conference recognized that and saw what she has given, not only to our program, but the American Athletic Conference. It just says a lot about the type of person and player she is.”

One of 麻豆原创’s EVERDAY CHAMPIONS overcame a 2-for-42 stretch early in the season to finish with a .321 avg. with three homers and paced the team in RBI (31) and doubles (13). The Knights three-hole hitter has compiled a .418 on-base and .482 slugging pct.

Head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie along with assistant coaches Ruben Felix and Hillary Barrow used the long season to help the Knights young team progress into the regular season champion.

“Once the team bought into that we have to play as a team and fight for each other, we really saw a difference in the focus of our student-athletes,” Gillispie said. “We went from playing one-run games to posting seven runs on the board. That progress is what I am proud of. Our coaching staff did a great job of putting our players in a position to be successful.”

麻豆原创, who was picked to finish fourth in the league’s preseason poll, has an upper class that contains just four juniors and not a single senior. The Knights registered a 39-15 overall record and 15-3 conference mark, which included series victories over each conference foe they played (Temple series was cancelled due to rain).

This was the first time that Coach Gillispie received an individual postseason accolade since being named the 1992 N4C Conference Coach of the Year guiding Joliet (Ill.) Junior College.

Coach Felix took an offense that was batting .208 following the first 10 games and steadily raised the team’s average during the campaign by mentoring the hitters to a current .275. Coach Barrow, who won the 2008 C-USA Tournament as a player for the Knights, adds another pair of accomplishments with the program with a regular season title and coaching honor.

Joining Sullivan on the first team was Turnier, who paced the league with a 1.16 ERA and tallied 53 strikeouts in 48.1 innings of work. The Palm Beach Gardens native had a 6-2 league mark, while going 18-5 overall, fanning 193 in 144.0 frames and compiled a 1.26 ERA, ranking 13th nationally.

Turnier along with Audas, who was named to the league’s second team, were a big reason for the Knights posting the eighth-best ERA in the nation at 1.59. The pair combined for 380 of the team 434 strikeouts, which is second in the nation behind conference-rival USF.

Audas went 7-1 in league action with 49 strikeouts in 58 frames. The Plant City native picked up series-clinching wins over USF and Louisville. She tallied a 17-10 overall mark with 187 punchouts in 174.0 innings.

One of the Knights most consistent players was Goodman, who compiled a .313 avg. with 51 hits. The Long Beach, Calif., native drove in 14 runs. She increased her batting avg. in conference games to .362 and came around to score nine times.

Solidifying the middle of the 麻豆原创 lineup was Je. Ujvari. The Pensacola native blasted five home runs on the season including grand slams in the Knights wins over Boston College and Louisville. She recorded a .333 avg. and finished second on the team with 23 RBI.

The no-hitter is the 11th in program history and Audas has now been involved in three of them. Audas (8-8) tallied 11 strikeouts in six shutout innings, while Huhn tossed the seventh and sent down one batter on strikes.

A total of 19 players made an appearance for the Knights against Iona (2-11), which saw sophomore left fielder Brittanne Gasser connect on a two-run homer to put the Knights up 7-0 in the sixth. It was the first career round tripper for the Sterling, Va., native.

The Knights open American Athletic Conference play on Saturday with a doubleheader against Memphis at 1 p.m. It will be The Jedi Knights day at the 麻豆原创 Softball Complex where fans are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite Star Wars character.

A combined no-hitter was notched by Audas and Huhn in the 7-2 victory over Iona. The big hit for the Knights came from Gasser, who notched her first career home run, while 麻豆原创 stole nine bases, one off the program record of 10 set vs. Penn last year.

After Sullivan notched a two-out single in the first inning, sophomore outfielder Mariah Garcia began the second with a base knock down the right field line. She swiped second and eventually scored on an RBI groundout by Solis.

The Knights pushed across two runs without a hit in the third to take a 3-0 advantage. A walk drawn by sophomore outfielder Taylor Wagner and quick steal of second allowed her to score on an errant throw sac bunt by junior outfielder Kahley Novak. The second error in the inning enabled Novak to cross the plate.

麻豆原创 tacked on two more runs in the fourth on an infield base hit by Novak with the bases loaded and single to left by Goodwin to extend the lead to 5-0.

Following a single by freshman pinch hitter Blaire Kelley, Gasser connected on the round tripper to left that put the Knights up 7-0 in the sixth.

The Gaels took advantage of a pair of walks, three wild pitches and an error to push across two runs in the seventh.

麻豆原创 sophomore pitcher Shelby Turnier tied the program’s seven-inning strikeout record with 15 and tallied the game-winning RBI triple in the last at bat to post a 1-0 victory over Florida A&M in the night cap on Saturday. The Knights came from behind earlier in the day against James Madison when junior outfielder Kahley Novak scored the go-ahead run on an errant throw for a walk-off 3-2 triumph at the 麻豆原创 Softball Complex.

The 8-0 start is the first in the history of program that made its debut in 2002. Five wins to begin a campaign was the previous record set by the 2004 squad.

Turnier’s 15 strikeouts were the fourth time a Knights’ hurler hit that number in a regulation game with standout Allison Kime accomplishing the feat three times in the memorable 2008 season at Bethune-Cookman (4/20/08) and UTEP (4/13/08) and vs. Vermont (3/1/08). The program’s strikeout record is 18 in 12 innings by Kime at Florida State (3/26/07).

Improving to 4-0 in the circle was junior pitcher Mackenzie Audas, who tossed a complete game against the Dukes, who took an early 2-0 lead in the third, with six strikeouts.

The Knights saw Turnier notch her first of two triples and sophomore catcher Kalyn Cenal connect on a double vs. James Madison. Freshman left fielder Linnea Goodman, Cenal and Novak added a pair of base knocks.

Recording a 2-for-2 outing against the Rattlers was sophomore first baseman Samantha McCloskey.

After opening the season with seven home games, 麻豆原创 hits the road on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. showdown with No. 12 Florida State. The competition ramps up more during the weekend with the Knights facing host No. 6 Alabama twice in the Easton Bama Bahs.

The third of four tournaments hosted by 麻豆原创 is set for Feb. 28-Mar. 1 with the Knights returning to the 麻豆原创 Softball Complex for a doubleheader vs. SIUE and Princeton at 10 a.m.

鈥淚鈥檓 extremely proud of the semester we have had academically and we continue to be strong in this area,鈥 said Kimya Massey, 麻豆原创鈥檚 Associate Athletic Director for Academic Services and Director of Academic Services for Student-Athletes. 鈥淲e knew it would be a good term overall, but to break records and continue to push the standard even higher is a credit to our student-athletes and their desire to be excellent in whatever they do. I must also complement the ASSA staff for their constant support and willingness to help our student-athletes achieve their goals.鈥

The staff has always gone out of their way to help the student-athletes who come to them. My coaches have always made the importance of academics clear to us. We have team academic goals at the beginning of each semester. The coaches and staff do a great job working together with us to make sure we鈥檙e on track.鈥

鈥淚 believe our fall GPA motivated us and our academic advisor Sarah Hill pushed us all to do even better,鈥 said women鈥檚 basketball player Erika Jones. 鈥淥ur coaches asked about our schoolwork as often as they could, so that was helpful and greatly appreciated.鈥

    ]]>
Based on data released by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), 麻豆原创 has posted the highest Graduation Success Rate (GSR) for student-athletes in school history. The NCAA released its GSR data for student-athletes who first enrolled in 2005 on Thursday.

麻豆原创鈥檚 GSR was 85 percent, up two points from last year鈥檚 report. The Knights rank No. 1 among public institutions in the State of Florida and second overall in the state. 麻豆原创鈥檚 GSR also ranks highest among public institutions in Conference USA and is tied for second overall in the league, behind Rice (95 percent).

麻豆原创 also compared well with institutions in the BIG EAST Conference, which the Knights will join on July 1, 2013. 麻豆原创 would currently rank No. 2 in the BIG EAST among public institutions, behind only Rutgers (88 percent). Among all football-playing members of the BIG EAST, the Knights would tie for third, behind Rutgers and Syracuse (87 percent).

鈥淩esults like this come from the hard work of our student-athletes, combined with the culture of academic success that our coaches and academic support staff promote on a daily basis,鈥 said Vice President and Director of Athletics Todd Stansbury. 鈥淲e鈥檙e all very proud of what our student-athletes are accomplishing.鈥

The football program finished 13 points above the national average, with an 81-percent mark, compared to 68 percent nationally. It was the sixth consecutive year the football program improved its GSR. Football鈥檚 81 percent was a program-best score. In football, 麻豆原创 ranks No. 2 in C-USA and would rank No. 2 among BIG EAST public institutions.

Eleven of 麻豆原创鈥檚 16 teams improved their GSR from the previous year鈥檚 report, while 11 of them were also above the national average for their sport. Three Knight squads 鈥 women鈥檚 tennis, softball and men鈥檚 golf 鈥 were at a perfect 100 percent. It was the seventh consecutive season for women鈥檚 tennis to record a 100-percent score. Men鈥檚 tennis recorded the biggest improvement among Knights programs, jumping 14 percentage points.

鈥淕raduation is obviously the ultimate goal and this report shows that our student-athletes, coaches and academic advisors are doing a great job promoting academic achievement,鈥 said Kimya Massey, Director of Academic Services for Student-Athletes. 鈥淚鈥檓 very proud to work with a group that is so dedicated to success in competition and in the classroom.鈥
