Students React to Fiesta Bowl Victory /news/students-react-fiesta-bowl-victory/ /news/students-react-fiesta-bowl-victory/#comments Wed, 08 Jan 2014 16:31:44 +0000 /news/?p=56508 麻豆原创 students returned to campus this week for the start of the spring semester, and we caught up with them to gather their reactions to 麻豆原创’s win over Baylor University in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl and what the victory means for the university.

The Knights beat the Baylor Bears 52-42 in Wednesday’s game.

Fans are invited to celebrate 麻豆原创’s historic win during a #麻豆原创iesta Pep Rally Wednesday, Jan. 8, and a parade at Walt Disney World Resort Saturday, Jan. 12. More information about the events is available here.

Felix Guerrero鈥淲inning the Fiesta Bowl was huge for our school. We were the youngest school ever to play in a BCS bowl, and to win the game means a lot for our program. It puts 麻豆原创 on the map and is a huge recruitment tool. [Blake] Bortles was the star of the game, and without him we wouldn鈥檛 have had the incredible season we had.鈥

– Felix Guerrero, junior, communication sciences and disorders major

Jalen Dixon鈥淭he bowl game was incredible but was exactly what I expected from 麻豆原创. A lot of teams underestimated us, but we are a football team that, regardless of the opponent, we rise to their level to put up a square fight. We鈥檝e shown all year that there isn鈥檛 a team we can鈥檛 score on when we need to, and we displayed that in the Baylor game.鈥

– Jalen Dixon, junior, sport and exercise science major

Jean Seney鈥淚 could not be happier with how we played in the Fiesta Bowl. To be honest, I was a little worried about our chances entering the game, but I was ecstatic to see us take the lead early and never take our foot off the pedal. Our defense played hard and held up against Baylor鈥檚 high-scoring offense a lot better than many expected. This game proved that 麻豆原创 should not be underestimated in any regard and that Knights will always exceed expectations.鈥

– Jean Seney, junior, marketing major

Beppel Brothers 鈥淚t was awesome that Bortles was able to lead us on two scoring drives so early in the game. They kept their head in the game and stayed focused when Baylor started to catch up and make it a close one.鈥

-Kyle Beppel (left), senior, hospitality major

鈥淚 tuned into the game late and was surprised by how much we were dominating Baylor. I鈥檓 just very impressed that we were able to beat a team that was ranked 6th in the country, and it鈥檚 awesome to see 麻豆原创 win and receive all this recognition.鈥

-Zach Beppel (right), junior, history major

Jake Campbell鈥淚 thought the game was great. Everyone pegged us as the underdog, and we were supposed to lose by 17 points, but we surprised everyone and beat them by 10, which is great for the school. It鈥檚 sad that Blake鈥檚 leaving, but I鈥檓 really excited for my next three years here watching our football team continue to play fun, competitive games.鈥

-Jake Campbell, freshman, photonic science and engineering major

President Hitt: ‘Thank You For a Knight to Remember’ /news/president-hitt-thank-knight-remember/ Fri, 03 Jan 2014 15:56:37 +0000 /news/?p=56448 The Knights are the Fiesta Bowl champions, and truly, we couldn’t have done it without you.

To the fans who packed the University of Phoenix stadium to cheer for the Knights; to the students who drove 80 hours across the country to be at the game; to the fans who couldn’t be in Arizona but purchased a ticket for a member of the military; to the supporters who packed restaurants and bars in Central Florida and across the country to watch the game; and to everyone else who cheered the Knights onto victory, I say “Thank you.”

Your support this week and this season means the world to me, our players, coaches and Athletics staff.

We showed the nation what 麻豆原创 is about, and we made history as the youngest university to ever play in- and win- a BCS bowl game.

From the start, a 麻豆原创 victory was called a longshot. We were the underdogs.

But after 11 regular-season victories, a conference championship and some of the most exciting finishes in college football, I wasn’t surprised that our Knights wouldn’t stop until they reached the ultimate goal: a BCS victory.

Thanks to their hard work and dedication and because of your support, we made 麻豆原创 history against a record-setting Baylor team.

麻豆原创 celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, and Jan. 1 kicked off the next 50 years of 麻豆原创.

What a way to start a new year and the next chapter in 麻豆原创 history.

Go Knights!

Fantastic Fiesta: Knights Top Baylor 52-42 /news/fantastic-fiesta-knights-top-baylor-52-42/ /news/fantastic-fiesta-knights-top-baylor-52-42/#comments Thu, 02 Jan 2014 08:19:53 +0000 /news/?p=56410 For complete coverage of the Knights’ big bowl win, visit .

To the delight of thousands of loud Knights fans, the youngest university to ever play in a BCS bowl game won a thriller on the largest national stage Wednesday.

麻豆原创 defeated No. 6 Baylor 52-42 to win the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, earning a victory that almost no 鈥渆xpert鈥 thought the Knights could achieve.

Knights鈥 fans were loud throughout the game at University of Phoenix Stadium, particularly in the fourth quarter when 麻豆原创 put the game away by scoring 17 points and making huge defensive stops. They roared when the Knights (12-1) took the stage to accept the Fiesta Bowl trophy and donned championship hats, soaking in one of the biggest milestones in the university鈥檚 history.

鈥淚t was memorable,鈥 cheerleader Jacob Serre said while celebrating on the field. 鈥淚t鈥檚 the last game I鈥檒l ever cheer. This (spirit squad) is my family, and what a great way for us to go out. I never doubted our team for a second.鈥

麻豆原创 President John C. Hitt beamed during media interviews on the field, talking about how much fun it was to watch the historic win while also praising the Knights for their success in the classroom. 麻豆原创 has the second-highest graduation rate among the 10 BCS schools, trailing only Stanford.

鈥淭hey are student-athletes,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hey are fine young men.鈥

Harlee Samuels and Erica Brink are friends and former 麻豆原创 roommates who flew across the country to watch those fine young men.

Brink landed in Arizona at 4 a.m. Wednesday after enduring an emergency landing in Memphis due to engine problems. But her troubles were worth it.

鈥淲e live only an hour away and don鈥檛 see each other often,鈥 she said during a pregame tailgate party at the stadium. 鈥淏ut we could find the time to fly to Arizona to see each other without any questions being asked.鈥

Samuels and Brink cheered as Maxwell Glorit and his Marching Knights performed the 麻豆原创 fight song to enthusiastic fans during the rally. The Marching Knights performed twice for fans before heading into the stadium.

The Fiesta Bowl had an extra special meaning for Glorit, who marched in the Fiesta Bowl parade as a high school freshman seven years ago. Today, he was back in Arizona as a leader and drum major for the Marching Knights.

Glorit enjoyed performing at the rallies and a halftime show that featured songs by Queen, Lady Gaga and The Who. His trip was memorable even before the game kicked off 鈥 and then it ended on the perfect note with the biggest win in school history.

鈥淲e鈥檙e all very excited,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a first for our university, and we鈥檙e soaking it all in.鈥

麻豆原创, Baylor Fans Give Back Before Fiesta Bowl /news/ucf-baylor-fans-give-back-fiesta-bowl/ Wed, 01 Jan 2014 01:21:36 +0000 /news/?p=56393 A day before 麻豆原创 and Baylor compete in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, fans from both schools joined together Tuesday to pack emergency food boxes for nearly 2,000 hungry Arizona residents.

About 100 volunteers worked for an hour and a half, loading supplies such as rice, cereal and orange juice into 1,840 boxes that will be given to senior citizens and young families in need.

The presidents and first ladies of both institutions 鈥 麻豆原创鈥檚 John C. and Martha Hitt and Baylor鈥檚 Ken and Alice Starr 鈥 worked alongside cheerleaders and fans from both schools.

The St. Mary鈥檚 Food Bank Alliance serves 200,000 meals a day and covers two-thirds of the state. Each emergency food box will last three or four days for a family of four in need.

Robert N. Shelton, executive director of the Fiesta Bowl, thanked the volunteers for being 鈥渇irst-class folks鈥 for giving back during their visit to Arizona. He said the extra help and attention this visit provided for St. Mary鈥檚 is especially critical as the holidays are winding down and nonprofit organizations begin to have more trouble generating the support they need to meet the needs of their clients.

麻豆原创 Provost and Executive Vice President Tony Waldrop participated along with 麻豆原创 Vice President and Director of Athletics Todd Stansbury, student body president Melissa Westbrook and vice presidents Maribeth Ehasz, Bob Holmes and M.J. Soileau. 麻豆原创 quarterback Blake Bortles’ family also helped out.

Also on Tuesday morning, members of the 麻豆原创 and Baylor spirit squads and mascots Knightro and Bruiser visited with children and their families at Phoenix Children鈥檚 Hospital. They played pool and other activities with the children in a state-of-the-art play area established in 2012 thanks to the generosity of Garth Brooks鈥 and Troy Aikman鈥檚 Teammates for Kids Foundation, a network of more than 3,000 professional athletes.

The zone includes a theater, performance stage and an interactive broadcast studio where kids create programs for the hospital鈥檚 own TV network.

Earlier Tuesday, members of both spirit squads and mascots Knightro and Bruiser woke up before 5 a.m. to spend time on the sets of two Arizona television stations. They talked with a Channel 12 reporter outside before posing for pictures in the studio with the anchors. Then each group of cheerleaders did a brief cheer during an on-air segment at Channel 3.

麻豆原创 fans also gathered at an Alumni Association watch party to view the Knights鈥 men鈥檚 basketball team鈥檚 American Athletic Conference opener against Louisville.

鈥淭he Tostitos Fiesta Bowl may be the primary reason we have traveled to Phoenix but it is not the sole reason,鈥 said Kevin Jackson, vice president for Student Life at Baylor University. 鈥淎s Baylor Bears, it is in our DNA to serve others who are in need.聽It will be especially meaningful to do so alongside 麻豆原创 fans.鈥

St. Mary鈥檚 Food Bank Alliance, the world鈥檚 first food bank, distributes emergency food boxes at no cost to individuals and families in need. Participants will pack meals from 10:30 a.m. until noon. The warehouse is only about a 10-minute drive from downtown Phoenix hotels where many fans will be staying.

鈥淲e congratulate Baylor and 麻豆原创 on fantastic seasons and welcome their students, administrators and fans to the Valley of the Sun and the Fiesta Bowl,鈥 St. Mary鈥檚 President and CEO Beverly Damore said. 鈥淥ne in five Arizonans and one in four of our children don鈥檛 know where their next meals will come from, so we are excited and blessed that Bears and Knights fans have chosen to join us in the fight against hunger in Arizona. Thank you and we will see you all on Dec. 31 as we work side by side.鈥

麻豆原创 and Baylor fans ages 12 and older are invited to participate, and space will be limited to 60 people per school.

Participants must register in advance and can do so by going to and clicking on Register. After creating a volunteer profile, fans should click Pick an Opportunity. Scroll down the left side of the page to find Invitation Code. 麻豆原创 fans should enter 麻豆原创2014. Volunteers will receive a confirmation email afterward.

The food bank will supply all of the food for the boxes. Participants can choose to make a $5 donation to cover the costs of filling one emergency food box. Each box contains the equivalent of a three- to four-day supply of food for a family of four.

President Hitt: ‘Show the Country What 麻豆原创 is About!’ /news/president-hitt-show-country-ucf/ /news/president-hitt-show-country-ucf/#comments Tue, 10 Dec 2013 17:12:53 +0000 /news/?p=56094 Our Knights have given us the football season we’ve been dreaming about: 11 victories, a conference championship and exciting finishes we’ll remember forever.

Now, you can help our team with one more thrilling finish – a 麻豆原创iesta!

With our invitation to the Jan. 1 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Ariz., the Knights have made college football history: at only 50 years old, we are the youngest university to ever play in a BCS bowl game.

Some have suggested that the BCS is too big for us, our team is out matched and our fans won’t travel. To them, I say, “You don’t know 麻豆原创.”

To you, I say, “Show the country what 麻豆原创 is about!”

We need you to “Charge On” to Arizona and support the Knights in the final game of this historic season. The nation will be watching how the team performs on the field against Baylor and how our fans support the Knights in the stands.

The Fiesta Bowl will join the collection of “I was there moments” for fans, from our first game on a rain-soaked field in 1979 to memorable victories against Alabama, Georgia, Penn State and Louisville.

Tickets, travel information and the top five reasons “U Can Fiesta” are at . And stay tuned for upcoming information about Fiesta Bowl events, alumni gatherings and more.

I often say that at 麻豆原创, we dream big. But I’m not sure many of us would have dreamed this big – making our first-ever trip to a BCS bowl in this, our 50th anniversary year.

Jan. 1, 2014 is the start of our next 50 years. Join me in Arizona as we begin this new era by cheering on our remarkable team in the Fiesta Bowl.

Go Knights!

鈥淓arning a bid to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl is an outstanding way to conclude 麻豆原创鈥檚 50th anniversary year,鈥 Hitt said. 鈥淐ongratulations to George and our 鈥楥ardiac Knights鈥 for their thrilling victories all season.

Coach O鈥橪eary and the Knights claimed the outright American Athletic Conference title, going undefeated in conference play for the first time in school history at 8-0. They already have matched the program record with 11 wins, and are ranked No. 15 in both the Associated Press Top 25 and the USA Today Coaches Poll, the highest marks since the program鈥檚 inception in 1979.

This will be 麻豆原创鈥檚 first BCS bowl and its sixth bowl game in the last nine seasons, with its first appearance coming in the 2005 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl. The Knights along with Baylor, Auburn and Michigan State were four programs who went unranked in the preseason poll but went on to reach a BCS bowl game this year.

The Black and Gold has key victories over then-No. 8/6 Louisville and Penn State en route to an 11-1 record, while it holds a 6-0 mark away from Orlando. Its only loss was a 28-25 decision to then-No. 12/13 South Carolina Sept. 28.

The Knights have never faced No. 6/5 Baylor on the gridiron, and are 17-9 all-time against teams from the Lone Star State. The Bears also are 11-1 this year with their lone loss coming at Oklahoma State, and they are coming off a 30-10 win over Texas Dec. 7 which sealed their Big 12 title as they went 8-1 in the league.

Junior signal-caller Bryce Petty ranks as one of the best quarterbacks in the nation, throwing for 30 touchdowns and just two interceptions, all while racking up 3,844 yards. He leads an offense that is first in the FBS with 624.5 total yards per game and 53.3 points per game.

On the other side of the ball, the Bears are 17th in total defense and 19th in scoring defense. Five different players have at least 10.0 tackles for loss and 11 players have notched one interception or more.
