Moore.

A new student-produced multimedia journalism project spotlighting the story of Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore, civil rights activists killed in 1951 in Brevard County, has been posted on the website of W麻豆原创 TV, Central Florida鈥檚 PBS station.

, a project featuring audio, visual and written content, was produced by students in the Nicholson School of Communication and Media to carry on the legacy of the couple.

The Moores were educators and activists in Mims, and he established the first NAACP chapter in the county. On Christmas night 1951 their house was bombed by white supremacists while they slept, causing their deaths. A replica of their home was built on their street, Freedom Avenue, and several markers, a museum and many local residents still carry their message.

Their legacy is something that can be preserved through storytelling projects like this, says Phil Hoffman, W麻豆原创鈥檚 executive director.

Rick Brunson, senior instructor of journalism, said the project started with a Facebook post. Moved to action after reading about the racism and domestic terrorism that gripped Central Florida in the 1940s and 鈥50s, Brunson visited the Harry T. & Harriette V. Moore Cultural Complex in Mims to learn more and pay his respects. When he shared his experience on social media, Hoffman contacted him and suggested the student project.

“W麻豆原创 would not be fulfilling its role as Central Florida’s Storytellers without partnering with community producers to tell even the most difficult stories,” Hoffman says. 鈥淒uring this time of racial reckoning in our country, it is important to tell these stories of people who worked for justice to help educate and engage our audience in this meaningful conversation.”

Brunson says he is appreciative the project came to fruition.

“It was so gratifying for the students and such a privilege to honor the Moores鈥 legacy and the impact their lives continue to have on Central Florida and beyond,” he says.

Presidents in Florida, a documentary by W麻豆原创 TV based on a book of the same name by 麻豆原创 history faculty member James C. Clark, will premiere Thursday, Dec. 10.

Florida has had a far-reaching effect on the presidency dating all the way back to George Washington, before the region was even a state.聽The film, written and produced by W麻豆原创 veteran television journalist Buddy Pittman 鈥74 and senior lecturer Clark, looks at the long-standing connection between the state and the White House.

The 50-minute documentary examines the environmental efforts spearheaded by several president, the space program, and landmark political moments that occurred here, including Richard Nixon鈥檚 Watergate 鈥淚 am not a crook鈥 speech and George W. Bush鈥檚 Sept. 11, 2001, press conference following the World Trade Center attack. The film also uncovers some of the little-known Florida stories that have involved presidents.

Clark wrote the book in 2016 as the presidential campaign got underway.

鈥淚 had worked with Buddy Pittman on the [W麻豆原创] Road Trip series for several years and when I suggested a documentary, Buddy embraced it,鈥 Clark says. 鈥淲e realized we had tremendous resources on campus.鈥

Appearing in the documentary with Clark, who is the author of nine books, are 麻豆原创 faculty members Amy Foster, Barbara Gannon, David Head, David Morton 鈥14MA 鈥19PhD, and Lori Walters.

The film is narrated by long-time CBS News radio reporter Peter King, who is known for his coverage of NASA and the space industry.

鈥淲麻豆原创 has dedicated itself to telling community stories as Central Florida鈥檚 Storytellers. It鈥檚 our commitment to the community to educate, engage and inspire through our content,鈥 says Phil Hoffman, W麻豆原创 executive director. 鈥Presidents in Florida comes at an interesting time in history, with Florida taking a major role.鈥

W麻豆原创 Receives Funding to Help Children Prepare Better for Emergencies /news/wucf-receives-funding-to-help-children-prepare-better-for-emergencies/ Wed, 10 Jul 2019 13:58:53 +0000 /news/?p=100430 $250,000 from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting will help expand the station鈥檚 Meet the Helpers project into a national model.

]]>
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting has provided W麻豆原创 TV with $250,000 to support the station鈥檚 Meet the Helpers project and make it a national model to improve crisis communication with children.

Meet the Helpers is a multiplatform project for teaching children about firefighters, police officers, teachers and other community helpers so the children can be better prepared in emergency situations. The series of videos introduces eight helpers in the community and was created as part of the outreach of W麻豆原创, Central Florida鈥檚 PBS station, after the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting.

This new funding will focus on emergency preparedness, youth stress and anxiety, and crisis communications to determine if videos can be used to help children understand helpers鈥 roles during an emergency and prepare children to react helpfully. The research will be conducted in partnership with 麻豆原创鈥檚 College of Community Innovation and Education and the Nicholson School of Communication and Media.

The research will be conducted in partnership with 麻豆原创鈥檚 College of Community Innovation and Education and the Nicholson School of Communication and Media.

Meet the Helpers was developed by W麻豆原创 and advised by Judith Levin 鈥86MEd, associate lecturer and program coordinator for Early Childhood Development Education.

The upcoming research will be conducted in two phases. Nicholson Professors Deanna and Timothy Sellnow will conduct a local study to determine how crisis communications can be effective with childhood audiences.

Levin, Professors Debbie Hahs-Vaughn and Bingbing Zhang 鈥18PhD and Assistant Professor Viki Kelchner of CCIE then will conduct a national research project on youth stress and anxiety. The team will train W麻豆原创 and eight other public television stations to collect data from their audiences to determine the impact that public media could have on decreasing youth anxiety and stress during emergencies.

Other stations around the country are invited to apply to be part of the pilot project and will receive $10,000 if selected. CET in Cincinnati, Vegas PBS in Las Vegas, and WFSU in Tallahassee, Florida, have already joined the project.

Meet the Helpers will be shown at the other stations in order to determine the programs鈥 effectiveness, with the goal to make additional community-helper videos. In addition to the videos already mentioned, the other helpers featured so far are: emergency room doctor, meteorologist, paramedic, line worker and a 911 operator.

鈥淲e are proud to help extend this research effort and look forward to extending this project to all public media across the U.S.,鈥 says Phil Hoffman, W麻豆原创 executive director. 鈥淲e believe that 鈥 we can contribute valuable research on how public media stations across the country can educate children year round about community helpers and be better prepared in a time of crisis.鈥
