{"id":108221,"date":"2020-04-07T14:13:39","date_gmt":"2020-04-07T18:13:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=108221"},"modified":"2020-04-08T09:25:09","modified_gmt":"2020-04-08T13:25:09","slug":"knight-thon-refuses-to-stop-dancing-raises-865k-for-childrens-miracle-network","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/knight-thon-refuses-to-stop-dancing-raises-865k-for-childrens-miracle-network\/","title":{"rendered":"Knight-Thon Refuses to Stop Dancing, Raises $865K for Children\u2019s Miracle Network"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This year\u2019s Knight-Thon looked a little different than years past, but the year-round, student-led fundraiser still managed the same big impact.<\/p>\n<p>麻豆原创 students raised&nbsp;$865,598.60&nbsp;to&nbsp;benefit&nbsp;local Children\u2019s Miracle Network Hospital, Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children.&nbsp;They still revealed the&nbsp;results of their fundraising efforts&nbsp;at the end of their&nbsp;annual&nbsp;20-hour dance marathon \u2014 only instead of coming together&nbsp;\u201cfor the kids\u201d&nbsp;at Addition Financial Arena,&nbsp;they flashed their results on individual computer screens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c麻豆原创&nbsp;students are some of the most determined people I have ever met,\u201d says&nbsp;Zaineb&nbsp;Saied,&nbsp;a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/nonprofit-management-bs\/\">nonprofit management<\/a> student and the executive director of Knight-Thon. \u201cIn the face of adversity, time and time again, they choose to stand up for what they believe in and never let things get in their way. Not even a global pandemic can stop them from continuing to Charge On for the kids. This experience proved that.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed oembed oembed-video d-flex flex-column align-items-center\">\n<div class=\"embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\"><noscript><iframe title=\"Knight-Thon 2020 - Morale Dance\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1Ka7XH2a6LI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript><iframe title=\"Knight-Thon 2020 - Morale Dance\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1Ka7XH2a6LI?feature=oembed\" class=\" lazyload\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cNot even a global pandemic can stop [麻豆原创 students] from continuing to Charge On for the kids. This experience proved that.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When it became evident that COVID-19 would cancel this year\u2019s event, Knight-Thon\u2019s leadership team immediately switched gears to figure out how to recreate a similar party on a virtual platform \u2014 and pull off the planning within 10 days.<\/p>\n<p>Saied&nbsp;says she could not be&nbsp;more proud&nbsp;of the result,&nbsp;especially after a challenging and emotionally taxing year.<\/p>\n<p>Last June, one of the executive board members, London Harrell, died in a hit-and-run crash. Shortly after, one of the group\u2019s \u201cMiracle Kids,\u201d who was well known among Knight-Thon&nbsp;participants,&nbsp;died&nbsp;after long-term health complications.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt felt like the world had gone still,\u201d Saied says. \u201cIt was hard to make sense of why&nbsp;this kept happening and&nbsp;how&nbsp;to keep moving. These two members of our Knight-Thon family quickly became everyone\u2019s motivations to do more than we ever had.&nbsp;We worked&nbsp;hard to plan an event that did them both justice in remembering and honoring them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every year, one of the most meaningful moments of the event occurs when a \u201cmiracle family\u201d shares their story with the dancers, and everyone is able to cut off the symbolic hospital band on their wrist, which was given to each participant at the start of the marathon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a&nbsp;moment that every child in a hospital looks forward to because it normally means they are better and they get to go home,\u201d Saied says.&nbsp;\u201cI was determined to make it virtual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Saied\u2019s team designed a graphic that acted as everyone\u2019s virtual hospital band. Participants wrote their names on them and posted to their social media accounts to show they were committed to participating in the marathon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe lost one of our Miracle Kids this summer, and&nbsp;something she always dreamed of being able to do was get her hospital band cut off. Her mom, with so much strength and courage,&nbsp;filmed&nbsp;a video for us explaining how Knight-Thon\u2019s dedication to this cause has brought their family so much hope,&nbsp;and how she wished her daughter could\u2019ve been here to see it. It was a really special moment that really showed everyone why Knight-Thon\u2019s work is so important.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Although the coronavirus canceled the
