{"id":108650,"date":"2020-04-22T10:56:03","date_gmt":"2020-04-22T14:56:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=108650"},"modified":"2021-11-09T16:26:23","modified_gmt":"2021-11-09T21:26:23","slug":"ucf-offers-digital-care-package-of-teaching-resources-for-public-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-offers-digital-care-package-of-teaching-resources-for-public-schools\/","title":{"rendered":"麻豆原创 Offers Digital \u2018Care Package\u2019 of Teaching Resources for Public Schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When\u00a0Central Florida\u00a0K-12 schools\u00a0announced they would transition\u00a0to\u00a0remote\u00a0instruction due to the coronavirus pandemic, 麻豆原创\u00a0Center for Distributed\u00a0Learning\u00a0executive director\u00a0<strong>Kelvin Thompson \u201999MA \u201905EdD<\/strong>\u00a0suspected teachers were going to need a little extra help.<\/p>\n<p>Thompson started to compile a list of resources \u2014 from videos with tips on putting classes online to podcasts on \u201cmaking remote teaching happen\u201d \u2014 and started typing a message of support to his teaching brethren.<\/p>\n<p>He called it a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1oDPT-XousBdMHAPzgQQKhnCtzbxL9ha7QfmZS0qTJ7Q\/edit\">care package<\/a>\u00a0and initially sent it to Orange, Seminole, Lake, Sumter, Osceola, Volusia and Marion county school systems.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI just wanted to offer something to say, \u2018We\u2019re in this with you.\u2019\u201d \u2014 Kelvin Thompson, 麻豆原创 Center for Distributed Learning executive director<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI just wanted to offer something to say,\u00a0\u2018We\u2019re in this with you,\u2019\u201d\u00a0says Thompson.<\/p>\n<p>麻豆原创 has offered online and blended education for more than two decades. Although the university experienced challenges just like every other educational institution in the country in moving every class online after spring break, 麻豆原创 is a leader in the field and had a jump-start on the transition process.<\/p>\n<p>More\u00a0than 85 percent of 麻豆原创 students take at least one online or blended course every year.<\/p>\n<p>Diane\u00a0Kornegay, superintendent of Lake County Schools, says she was grateful to the university for\u00a0sharing\u00a0its\u00a0resources and expertise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReceiving the care package is yet another way that 麻豆原创 supports its local school districts and we are thankful for the partnership,\u201d she wrote in an email.<\/p>\n<p>After Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced April 18 distance learning will continue for the remainder of the school year, Thompson says his biggest piece of advice for both teachers and students is to just do the best they can to follow procedures.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe biggest key right now is to offer something of value while not overwhelming students.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to get through this together. Just take it a day at a time,\u201d he says. \u201cUniversity of North Carolina Professor Brandon Bayne came up with some principles as he adjusted his syllabus for remote instruction. The gist of it is: \u2018Nobody signed up for this. We\u2019re going to prioritize supporting each other as humans. Some of the academics is going to suffer, but we\u2019re going to foster intellectual nourishment, social connection and personal accommodation. We\u2019re going to be flexible and adjust.\u2019 And I think that\u2019s spot on.
