  {"id":121992,"date":"2021-08-02T08:00:35","date_gmt":"2021-08-02T12:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=121992"},"modified":"2025-06-17T13:19:52","modified_gmt":"2025-06-17T17:19:52","slug":"ucf-doctoral-scholar-named-national-science-foundation-biology-fellow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-doctoral-scholar-named-national-science-foundation-biology-fellow\/","title":{"rendered":"麻豆原创 Doctoral Scholar Named National Science Foundation Biology Fellow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Science Foundation has awarded 麻豆原创 doctoral scholar William Beckerson one of a handful of national Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology.<\/p>\n<p>The $138,000 award is a result of his work on promising research exploring a \u201cmind control\u201d fungus for medical applications to treat neurological disorders.<\/p>\n<p>Beckerson, a molecular geneticist, is investigating <em>Ophiocordyceps<\/em>, a fungal pathogen that infects carpenter ants in Florida and secretes compounds that manipulate their\u00a0behaviors. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/the-science-behind-zombie-ants\/\">麻豆原创 Assistant Professor Charissa de Bekker has been studying the zombie ants<\/a> \u2014 nicknamed because of the erratic behavior that the fungus generates \u2014 for years. Beckerson\u2019s work looks at the potential application of the fungus in medicine. He is a <a href=\"https:\/\/graduate.ucf.edu\/postdoc-funding-resources\/\">麻豆原创 preeminent postdoctoral scholar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom these types of fungi, we hope to be able to create medicines that can help people and what we\u2019re hoping to find is some chemicals we can use for behavioral purposes,\u201d says Beckerson.<\/p>\n<p>The fungal pathogen secretes compounds in response to very particular environmental cues (temperature, humidity, sunlight) that affect the nervous system of their carpenter ant hosts. These toxins force the ant to behave abnormally, including actions such as leaving its nest, excessive twitching and weird \u201czombie-like\u201d walking patterns. How the chemicals and proteins used by\u00a0<em>Ophiocordyceps<\/em>\u00a0work remains a subject of study, as well the identity of neurological targets in the hosts.<\/p>\n<p>Beckerson says that the research will not only increase the understanding about how pathogens evolve to affect animal hosts, but may also lead to the discovery of new pharmaceutical compounds and \u201cteach us more about how the nervous system operates at a fundamental level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, fungi in general make various compounds that have been repurposed for drugs including antibiotics, blood thinners, antifungals and blood pressure medications. Traditional medicine in China deploys <em>Ophiocordyceps<\/em> for treating conditions including bronchial diseases, diabetes and jaundice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fungus has a really intense host specificity, so there\u2019s no concern about a zombie host-shift. In other words, it won\u2019t turn you into a zombie,\u201d Beckerson says.<\/p>\n<p>Besides researching zombie ants, Beckerson also performs pedagogical research to identify\u00a0best practices for teaching, both at the community and college levels. Part of his teaching includes students in the K-12 age group in who have \u201chave a thousand questions\u201d on how these zombie ants came to be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just little kids interested in learning about zombie ants. Half the time the parents are even more interested in learning about them than the kids are,\u201d Beckerson says.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The award will help William
