{"id":134146,"date":"2023-03-06T16:51:51","date_gmt":"2023-03-06T21:51:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=134146"},"modified":"2025-06-17T14:42:10","modified_gmt":"2025-06-17T18:42:10","slug":"reducing-the-choice-between-a-textbook-and-your-next-meal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/reducing-the-choice-between-a-textbook-and-your-next-meal\/","title":{"rendered":"Reducing the Choice Between a Textbook and Your Next Meal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With textbooks and other required course materials proven to be costly, 麻豆原创 faculty, staff and students have come up with creative, yet practical, solutions through the creation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/open-educational-resources\">Open Educational Resources (OER)<\/a>, which include free teaching, learning and research materials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has always been a need for open educational resources in higher education,\u201d says Nicole Lapeyrouse, a 麻豆原创 chemistry professor and 2023 Affordable Instructional Materials (AIM) High Impact Award winner. \u201cBy adopting or creating OER, you are able to further support students by making your courses more affordable and helping reduce the financial burden on students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isabella Griffin, a student in Lapeyrouse\u2019s <em>Chemistry Fundamentals I<\/em> course, confirms those benefits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe free textbook has helped ease the financial burden associated with being a college student.,\u201d she says. \u201cSometimes, high prices prevent students from having textbook access \u2014 to the detriment of student learning. I greatly appreciate the free and open access to [the <a href=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.online.ucf.edu\/chemistryfundamentals\/\"><em>Chemistry Fundamentals<\/em><\/a> eBook]. It has increased my ability to access relevant and useful resources related to class.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom my own personal experience with not always having access to affordable resources,&#8221; says Lapeyrouse, \u201cI wanted to prevent students from having to make a tough call on [whether to] buy the required resources or pay a bill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the 2022 Student Textbook and Course Materials Survey conducted by Florida Virtual Campus (FLVC), 53% of students from Florida\u2019s public higher education institutions indicated they did not purchase a required textbook for financial reasons. Forty-four percent took fewer courses. Thirty-eight percent did not register for a specific course. And 24% dropped a course due to the high cost of textbooks.<\/p>\n<p>During the Fall 2022 semester, at least 61 麻豆原创 faculty members provided their required course materials at no cost to students through\u00a0the use of OER. These efforts resulted in an estimated combined savings of $1,439,063.64\u00a0for 12,306 students enrolled in 99 course sections across four colleges and 12 departments. Since the Fall 2020 semester, roughly 18% of 麻豆原创 students took a course offering OER \u2014 a 9% increase.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are grateful to our faculty who go the extra distance to make student course materials affordable,&#8221; says Michael D. Johnson, provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs. &#8220;The success of our students is paramount, and these efforts are being felt university-wide.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The growth of OER across 麻豆原创 has been fueled by a mixture of highly-motivated teams situated within 麻豆原创 <a href=\"https:\/\/cdl.ucf.edu\/teach\/oer-practices\/\">Digital Learning<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/library.ucf.edu\/textbook-affordability\/\">麻豆原创 Libraries<\/a>, Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning (FCTL), Student Government, registered student organizations, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/wikiknights.com\/\">Wiki Knights<\/a>, and most importantly, the faculty units intent on delivering free, openly-licensed course materials to replace costly versions of the same or very similar content being sold on the free market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe work that Nicole and her colleagues are doing on OER is remarkable in several aspects,\u201d says Department of Chemistry Chair Michael Hampton. \u201cThese OER materials are readily available at any time, at no charge, and can be used as a library for students to review and reinforce their studies. Additionally, faculty, including Nicole and her colleagues, are preparing these materials free of charge \u2014 [an example of] action arising from dedication.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Data, such as those reported in the FLVC survey, continue to motivate 麻豆原创 faculty, staff and students to devise actionable plans for creating viable open solutions that promote equitable access to customizable, shareable and impactful course materials.<\/p>\n<p>This year, Student Government\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1MSFLn6PgRhySwKS6_7TywZd8DmtAD45L\/preview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Resolution 53-58: Encouraging the 麻豆原创 to Support the Use of Open Textbooks<\/a> has been a major talking point at recent meetings with high-level administration, and units across campus have already offered support to amplify student voices on this topic.<\/p>\n<p>The FCTL, for example, expressed a willingness to deliver select communications about open education and shared ideas for a tabling opportunity to increase faculty awareness. Registered student organization Florida PIRG Students at 麻豆原创 is also back in swing and working with the <a href=\"https:\/\/wikiknights.com\/\">Wiki Knights<\/a> to help bring textbook affordability to the forefront.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the 麻豆原创 Libraries continues to offer support to the open education initiative by collaborating during bi-weekly team meetings, supporting Wiki Knights tabling events and generally helping advance strategic aspects of the OER movement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By offering free open educational resources to their students, 麻豆原创
