Also, one particular asteroid, (52246) Donaldjohanson, seems to belong to the Erigone family based on its spectrum.</news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/141442//p>/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/141442/n<h2>Piecing Together History</news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/141442//h2>/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/141442/n<p>Due to the importance of understanding the nature of primitive objects, numerous spacecraft have targeted primitive asteroids, such as JAXA/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/141442/u2019s Hayabusa2 and NASA/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/141442/u2019s OSIRIS-REx, which visited, studied, and returned samples from Ryugu and <a href=/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/141442/"https:/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/141442///news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/141442//www.ucf.edu/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/141442//news/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/141442//the-long-journey-of-nasas-osiris-rex/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/141442///news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/141442/">Bennu</news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/141442//a>, respectively.</news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/141442//p>/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/141442/n<p>Bennu and Ryugu prompted researchers to further study primitive asteroids and figure out where they came from, Harvison says.</news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/141442//p>/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/141442/n<p>Erigone was one of the final pieces of the large library of PRIMASS data that existed, but had yet to be studied, Harvison says. PRIMASS aims to understand the variety of surface properties amongst primitive collisional families in the asteroid belt and map their composition.</news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/141442//p>/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/141442/n<p>A collisional family of asteroids refers to a group of asteroids that are believed to have originated from the breakup of a larger parent body due to a collision. That was very important because it was the family that could give closure to learning about the inner [asteroid] belt families. Until you ask the right question or have the tools, sometimes you don/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/141442/u2019t seek that answer. The data we can collect from Earth is limited.
