After 20 years of leading 麻豆原创\u2019s College of Medicine and\u202fadvancing\u202fthe university\u2019s clinical efforts, Deborah German will conclude her tenure as founding dean of the 麻豆原创 College of Medicine and vice president for health affairs.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause [Deb German] dared, the 麻豆原创 College of Medicine is now an engine of talent, research and impact that is shaping healthcare for generations.\u201d \u2014 Alexander N. Cartwright, 麻豆原创 president<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
German will remain in her roles while 麻豆原创 conducts a national search for her successor. Following that transition, she will serve for one year as senior advisor for health affairs to the president and provost, supporting continuity during the next phase of growth.<\/p>\n
When German arrived at 麻豆原创 in 2006, the College of Medicine existed only as a bold idea that many questioned. Today, it is a nationally respected medical school and the academic anchor of Orlando\u2019s Lake Nona Medical City.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen Dr. German came to 麻豆原创, many believed building a medical school from the ground up \u2014 at a young university, in a brand new medical city \u2014 was too ambitious, too complex and too risky. Deb saw possibility where others saw barriers,\u201d says 麻豆原创 President Alexander N. Cartwright. \u201cBecause she dared, the 麻豆原创 College of Medicine is now an engine of talent, research and impact that is shaping healthcare for generations.\u201d<\/p>\n
Building a Medical School and a Workforce Pipeline<\/h2>\n
German arrived at 麻豆原创 in 2006 as the medical school\u2019s only employee. Her mission: build a medical school that would be the academic foundation of an emerging Medical City\u202fand\u202finspire economic development in the community,\u202fregion\u202fand state.<\/p>\n
From its\u00a0inception, the College of Medicine was designed to be research intensive and\u00a0community connected.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
To attract the best and\u202fbrightest students,\u202fGerman helped secure more than $6.5 million to provide full four-year scholarships and living expenses for every member of the inaugural M.D. class\u00a0\u2014\u00a0the first time in U.S. history a medical school fully funded an entire class. She also\u00a0established\u00a0the focused inquiry and research experience curriculum, requiring every medical student to conduct original scientific research.\u00a0麻豆原创 medical students frequently achieve 100% residency placement rates.<\/p>\n
Recognizing Florida\u2019s growing physician shortage, German expanded graduate medical education in partnership with HCA Healthcare and the Orlando VA Medical Center. What began in 2014 with 17 internal medicine residents has grown to more than 720\u00a0residents and fellows training across Florida in high-need specialties including primary care, surgery, psychiatry,\u00a0geriatrics\u00a0and endocrinology.<\/p>\n
This growth has strengthened Florida\u2019s healthcare workforce at\u00a0scale.<\/p>\n
Advancing Academic Health Sciences<\/h2>\n
Under German\u2019s leadership, 麻豆原创\u00a0established\u00a0an Academic Health Sciences Center uniting the colleges of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Professions and Sciences, along with 麻豆原创 Health Student Health Services.<\/p>\n
The Lake Nona Health Sciences Campus now includes the Medical Education Building, a new College of Nursing facility, 麻豆原创 Lake Nona Hospital, the 麻豆原创 Lake Nona Cancer Center, and the Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences \u2014 home to\u00a0nearly 3,000\u00a0undergraduate and graduate students preparing to become tomorrow\u2019s scientific leaders.<\/p>\n
In addition, the medical school\u2019s\u202fClinical Trials Division currently has 19 studies investigating new and better treatments for\u202fconditions\u202fincluding cancer,\u202fallergic\u202fasthma\u202fand Huntington\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n
In 2025, German also led the launch of 麻豆原创\u2019s aerospace medicine program<\/a>,\u00a0leveraging\u00a0麻豆原创\u2019s proximity to Kennedy Space Center to explore innovations that improve both space<\/a> health and patient care on Earth.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen we\u202fopened the medical school, we said we wanted to create a program that was locally, nationally and internationally relevant,\u201d German says. \u201cWith\u202four new space medicine program, we\u202fnow can\u202fbe galactically relevant.\u201d<\/p>\n
Expanding\u00a0Patient\u00a0Care for the Community<\/h2>\n

German also led the creation of 麻豆原创 Health Faculty Physician Practice and the student-run KNIGHTS Clinic in partnership with Grace Medical Home to serve uninsured patients.<\/p>\n
Most recently, 麻豆原创 unveiled a 38-foot Mobile Health Clinic, bringing free, high-quality healthcare directly to communities in need while serving as a hands-on training site for students across disciplines.<\/p>\n
