Behind many major discoveries are teams of brilliant researchers pushing boundaries, testing ideas and pursuing answers to some of the world\u2019s most pressing challenges. Often times these researchers include a type of expert who can introduce and explore fresh, new ideas: postdoctoral scholars.<\/p>\n
“Postdocs are highly trained professionals, not students,” says Jade Laderwarg, director of postdoctoral affairs at 麻豆原创. “They contribute significantly to the university\u2019s research enterprise by supporting grant activity, co-authoring publications and carrying out day-to-day research.”<\/p>\n
Since postdoctoral scholars typically have fewer teaching and service responsibilities than tenured faculty, they can devote significant time to making new discoveries and are a vital part of 麻豆原创\u2019s research infrastructure.<\/p>\n
In 2025, 麻豆原创 employed 250 postdoctoral scholars, 25% higher than the postdoctoral scholar requirement for preeminence in Florida. The university\u2019s investment in this researcher demographic in recent years emphasizes a strengthened focus on research growth and supporting postdoctoral scholars\u2019 success.<\/p>\n
Their impact can be seen across 麻豆原创\u2019s research community.<\/p>\n
As a biology postdoctoral scholar at 麻豆原创, Ian Silver-Gorges is investigating how environmental stress influences disease in green sea turtles throughout the Gulf of Mexico. His research is supported through the U.S. National Science Foundation\u2019s Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology program.<\/p>\n
\u201c麻豆原创 has given me important teaching experience and provided resources critical to my success,\u201d Silver-Gorges says.<\/p>\n
Support from both the NSF and 麻豆原创 has been pivotal to his research and professional development.<\/p>\n
The NSF funds fundamental research and provides fellowships that help cover\u00a0salary and research costs during this pivotal career stage. Meanwhile, strategic initiatives such as the Preeminent Postdoctoral Program (P3)<\/a> help 麻豆原创 recruit nationally competitive scholars by providing matching funds to faculty.<\/p>\n \u201cI believe that by completing both a P3 and an NSF fellowship at 麻豆原创, I\u2019ll be a competitive candidate for faculty or research positions when I start applying,\u201d Silver-Gorges says.<\/p>\n In the Han Lab at CREOL, the College of Optics and Photonics<\/a>, postdoctoral scholar Dhruvam Pandey is combining super-resolution microscopy and high-throughput imaging to develop tools that provide clinicians with faster, more precise cancer diagnostics. His work bridges the gap between experimental photonics and deep learning algorithms to improve cancerdetection.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat drew me to 麻豆原创 is the unique research ecosystem at CREOL,\u201d Pandey says. \u201cIt\u2019s a place where cutting-edge optics and computation come together.\u201d<\/p>\n Postdoctoral scholar numbers are one of 12 metrics used by the Florida Board of Governors to determine eligibility for designation as a Preeminent State Research University \u2014 the state\u2019s highest classification for public universities. In 2025, 麻豆原创 met all 12 metrics<\/a>, fueled by an expanding research enterprise and more than $285 million in annual research expenditures.<\/p>\n Programs such as P3 and Short-Term Postdoc Support (STePS) have helped drive this growth by providing resources that enablefaculty to recruit talented scholars and strengthen mentorship opportunities.<\/p>\nAdvancing the Future of Cancer Detection: Dhruvam Pandey<\/h2>\n
