Large numbers of worker bees were leaving the hives with plenty of food but not enough bodies to care for the queen and young bees. Experts attributed the loss to a number of causes, including parasites and pesticides used in farming. This phenomenon, known as Colony Collapse Disorder, sparked worldwide concern for these insects that play a vital role in crop pollination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">To combat the issue, 麻豆原创 is working to attract and support pollinators, including honeybees, native bees, wasps and butterflies. Students and faculty recently planted two pollinator gardens on campus and placed three honeybee hives in the <a style=\"color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/arboretum.ucf.edu\/\">麻豆原创 Arboretum<\/a>. Stomachs<\/span><\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Bees have two stomachs. One digests food. The other stomach stores nectar until worker bees return to the hive, where they can feed it to other bees or put it in honeycomb cells for honey production.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #d5ca6b;\">2. Stinger<\/span><\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Worker bees die after stinging mammals with thick flesh, such as humans, because their barbed stingers lodge in the victim, along with their digestive material, muscles and a venom sac.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #d5ca6b;\">3. Abdomen<\/span><\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Four pairs of glands on the underside of young worker bees\u2019 abdomens secrete beeswax. It is later used to construct honeycomb.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #d5ca6b;\">4. Legs<\/span><\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Honeybees have six legs arranged in three pairs. The rear pair have stiff hairs that hold pollen as they fly.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #d5ca6b;\">5. Eyes<\/span><\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">With their five eyes, bees can detect ultraviolet light, leading them to nectar.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #d5ca6b;\">6. Here are some of her findings:<\/span><br \/>\n[clearfix][\/clearfix]<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 26px; font-family: gotham; color: #ffffff;\"><strong>Pollinators on Campus<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>[photo id=&#8221;12912&#8243; title=&#8221;map&#8221; alt=&#8221;&#8221; position=&#8221;left&#8221; width=&#8221;50%&#8221;][\/photo]<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><em>*For the safety of our campus community, hives should not be approached without authorization.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>[clearfix][\/clearfix]<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>[blockquote source=&#8221;Patrick Bohlen&#8221; cite=&#8221;&#8221; color=&#8221;&#8221; css_class=&#8221;&#8221;]\u201cHaving honeybee hives on campus provides a hands-on educational opportunity for students to learn about social insects.\u201d [\/blockquote]<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 26px; font-family: gotham; color: #ffffff;\"><strong>Honey in Context<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 42px; font-family: gotham; color: #d5ca6b;\">2 million<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; font-family: gotham; color: #ffffff;\"> Flowers that must be tapped by about 556 worker bees to make one pound of honey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 42px; font-family: gotham; color: #d5ca6b;\">11,880<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; font-family: gotham; color: #ffffff;\"> Pounds of honey produced in Florida, the no. 4 state for producing honey in 2016, following North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 42px; font-family: gotham; color: #d5ca6b;\">44<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; font-family: gotham; color: #ffffff;\"> Pounds of honey collected from 麻豆原创\u2019s hives after three months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 42px; font-family: gotham; color: #d5ca6b;\">33.3<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; font-family: gotham; color: #ffffff;\"> Percent of all food and beverages consumed in the U.S. that are dependent on pollination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 42px; font-family: gotham; color: #d5ca6b;\">1\/12<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; font-family: gotham; color: #ffffff;\">Of a teaspoon is the amount of honey a single honeybee will produce in a lifetime.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 26px; font-family: gotham; color: #ffffff;\"><strong>The workings of the honey bee hive.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #d5ca6b;\">1. Roof<\/span><\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Protects the hive from water and insulates from heat and cold.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #d5ca6b;\">2. Hive body and honey supers<\/span><\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">The hive body houses the queen, female worker bees and male drones. The honey supers, which rest on top of the hive body, store honey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #d5ca6b;\">3. Queen excluder<\/span><\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Prevents queen from going into the supers while allowing the workers to pass through.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #d5ca6b;\">4. Frame<\/span><\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Provides a foundation for bees to build an evenly spaced comb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[photo id=&#8221;12921&#8243;
