Holograms are no longer the stuff of science fiction. Now, they\u00a0have the capability of improving our well-being by changing\u00a0the game in healthcare education.<\/p>\n

麻豆原创’s\u00a0College of Health Professions and Sciences<\/a> is leading the way\u00a0in using hologram technology to train future healthcare professionals\u00a0with a new device that allows students to interact live with holograms or\u00a0through prerecorded content. Nicknamed Dr. Hologram<\/a> \u2014 the patient\u00a0simulation tool created by PORTL \u2014 students receive lifelike patient\u00a0interactions, without a patient ever actually being present.<\/p>\n

麻豆原创 was able to acquire the device thanks to a gift from Brooks\u00a0Rehabilitation. The hologram technology introduces students to a\u00a0variety of patients to hear their stories, observe their symptoms and\u00a0facilitate a human connection.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy introducing students to a wide variety of patients \u2014 especially\u00a0those with rare conditions \u2014 they\u2019re more likely to identify those, help an\u00a0individual get to diagnosis quicker, get treatment and ultimately improve\u00a0their quality of life,\u201d says Bari Hoffman \u201996 \u201998MA,<\/strong> associate dean of\u00a0clinical affairs at 麻豆原创\u2019s College of Health Professions and Sciences.<\/p>\n

HOW IT WORKS<\/h2>\n

A New Dimension<\/h3>\n

Students learn by assessing patients with\u00a0varying conditions that support the material\u00a0they are learning in class. The technology offers\u00a0both live and prerecorded experiences that are\u00a0displayed using a human-size 4K volumetric\u00a0resolution.<\/p>\n

\u201cPORTL allows us to have patient\u00a0experiences without being in the same\u00a0place,\u201d says Amardeep Singh \u201919<\/strong>, a physical\u00a0therapy doctoral<\/a> student. \u201cIt also adds a layer\u00a0of safety, especially during COVID-19, for\u00a0patients and students.\u201d<\/p>\n

Complete Picture<\/h3>\n

Today, a class is meeting with a hologram\u00a0of a child with a rare genetic condition called\u00a0Angelman syndrome. This provides students\u00a0with an opportunity to perform a cognitive\u00a0screening and get a complete picture of the\u00a0patient through high-quality images. While\u00a0examining the child through 3D imaging,\u00a0students view spasticity \u2014 muscle tightness\u00a0and stiffness \u2014 and hear speech patterns,\u00a0among other characteristics of the condition.\u00a0The hologram also allows them to pick up\u00a0on nonverbal cues that could be missed with\u00a0tools that have a limited view, like a video\u00a0conference call.<\/p>\n

Cutting-edge Clinical Practice<\/h3>\n

Currently, the lifelike hologram technology is\u00a0being utilized by various disciplines, including\u00a0speech-language pathology, physical therapy,\u00a0athletic training and clinical social work, and\u00a0additional programs will be added in the\u00a0future. This fosters hands-on, interprofessional\u00a0learning, which prepares students with practical\u00a0experience in working on a healthcare team.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis has revolutionized the way we visualize\u00a0patients,\u201d says Singh. \u201cInstead of reading about\u00a0conditions in a book or seeing a flat image on a\u00a0screen, we\u2019re now able to use 3D-holographic\u00a0images to examine the whole body. Plus, it\u00a0provides us with real-world experience \u2014\u00a0interviewing patients, asking questions and\u00a0knowing what questions to ask \u2014 which helps\u00a0us become more comfortable in different\u00a0situations and will improve quality of care.\u201d<\/p>\n

Improving Lives<\/h3>\n

In addition to providing simulated patients,\u00a0the device allows 麻豆原创 to advance the health\u00a0and well-being of communities both locally\u00a0and nationally. The technology\u2019s ability to\u00a0reach patients virtually and in real time will\u00a0expand access to quality healthcare for more\u00a0people, including residents in rural areas\u00a0where in-person care is often not feasible.\u00a0The university also plans to host virtual\u00a0case studies where experts from around the\u00a0world will present their patients using the\u00a03D technology.<\/p>\n
